A further 43 km of the Bologna to Lecce Adriatic railway has now been upgraded for 200km/h (124mph) running - between Bologna and Ancona as part of a long term plan to convert 300km (186 miles) out of the 798 km (500 miles) between Bologna and Lecce to 200 km/h.

The works are planned to be completed during 2022 - after which journey times between Bologna and Bari will be reduced by 45 minutes and Bologna to Lecce journeys by 1 hour.
Average speed for the 500mile route is currently approximately 71mph, but increasing speeds and cutting the journey time by one hour will increase this to an average of 84mph including stops.

The latest sections of route to be upgraded are (counting in kilometres from Bologna southbound)
kilometre posts (kp) 45-48
kp 50 - 66
These join recently upgraded sections of 200km/h track south of Rimini between kp 114 and 129, kp 147 and 154.
The existing 200 km/h section between KP 158 to 166 has been extended south to kp176. A new section of 200 km/h track extends awards Ancona between kp 180 and 193 formerly 180 km/h (112mph) .

Upgrading work continues between Ancona and Brindisi, with further stretches of track expected to be upgraded by 2022. The only other short stretches of 200km/h are found between Brindisi and Bari between kp 764 and 776, and 778 to 793.
However there are numerous sections of 180km/h (112mph) track. The remainder of the route remains mainly 150 km/h (93mph).

Scheduled journey times remain unchanged - though late running trains do use the higher speeds to regain time.
Upgrade works include rationalisation of some station layouts, upgraded catenary and power supplies, upgraded signalling, changes to can't and tracks geometry, removal of numerous level crossings.
Trenitalia is also replacing many of the older Frecciabianca services along the Adriatic route with Frecciargento services utilising the former Dutch/Belgian Fyra transits - now refurbished and renumbered ETR700.
