Italy has unveiled its latest innovation in the campaign against Covid-19 — a medically-equipped train with an onboard intensive care unit designed to ease the pressure on the country’s hospitals when required. The vehicle was inaugurated Monday [8 March] at Rome’s main Termini train station.

The train was unveiled again in Milan the following day :)

The train was designed and built in response to a European Space Agency (sic) competition.

Here are two videos (commentaries in Italian) showing the train:video1 and video2.

Italian railways have a long and honourable history of helping out with national disasters in many different ways. Following the Umbria (1997) and L'Aquila (2009) earthquakes, large numbers of surplus sleeping cars were quickly drafted-in from all over Italy to Foligno and L'Aquila respectively, to act as emergency temporary accommodation for survivors whose homes had been destroyed or made uninhabitable.

They also have special pilgrimage trains, consisting mainly of couchette carriages, but including fully-equipped ambulance cars in which seriously ill patients can be cared for on the long journey to and from Lourdes in South-West France from a myriad of different starting points in Italy - mainly in the South, where religious fervour is more prevelant nowadays.

So maybe these new ICU trains will run to Lourdes too...
I suspect not, as they are designed to treat seriously ill Covid patients in areas of Italy where the local hospitals are in danger of being overwhelmed. They will be able to be moved quickly to any part of Italy where they are needed although, having the full ICU facilities and personnel on board, they will no doubt be able to be used to transfer patients from one part of the country to another wnhere there are maybe more hospital beds available. Mobile 'Nightingale hospitals' perhaps?

When the local hospitals are overwhelmed, going to Lourdes may be the only solution <(
