Thank you. I'm hoping to get as many IETs in as I can before the "skip stop" timetable comes in on GWR - it'll be rather more awkward once some of them don't stop at Reading...

Wait, skip-stopping will include going RA through Reading? Now this I am interested in!

Luckily for me there's no skip-stopping in my neck of the woods on GWR, save for that weird Moreton-in-Marsh to London which runs RA to Oxford. That's a working I'd like to do for the novelty!

Yes, the additional Bristol services each hour will run fast between Paddington and Bristol Parkway then Temple Meads only, if I recall correctly from the various GWR threads on this forum. Should be a cracking good run for a fun ride, but unless the diagrams are on the basis of alternating the fast with the normal runs ( i.e. out fast / back normal and vice-versa ) it'll be a nightmare for haulage chasing!

I suspect for the most part those will be single 800/0s, as I can see off peak those services rivalling the Gatwick Express services for fresh air carriers. :)

...which would also imply that what's on a fast should stay on fasts all day...? Just as well I only need three 800/0s for haulage now, then...

No idea. I just need 001 & 002 of the 800/0s, but like everybody else it be a waiting game until they enter revenue service.

BTW wouldn't a Thames Branches Day Ranger be better value for money than multiple BZ6 - Reading day returns?

Have thought of that but I need the Travelcard element anyway as I'm starting from Epsom... Usually I'll do only one or possibly two returns for IET chasing. The three in that day was exceptional.

Tomorrow is a bit different... I'll be chasing 43366 for a photo to clear the 43s ( I have one of it before it was renumbered though ) and I'm gambling on it being on the early Edinburgh to Plymouth and that the 09.43 off Euston won't be delayed en route to New Street... That could be fun...

Well, 43366 remained at Craigentinny, so that was - literally - out of the picture, but I did clear my last two 170s for photo which was obviously worth the trip in itself just to get those out of the way...

Starting off from Epsom on 455 872 + 455 705 + 456 016 to Waterloo, snapping 707 010 and 378 218 while passing Clapham Junction, I got to Euston with the help of 51556 + 51531 in plenty of time to catch the 09.43, which was 390 126. Noted at Willesden / Wembley were 710 264, 90 035, 66 537, 67 021 and 67 024 while 57 304 and 86 259 were lurking at Rugby.

While approaching New Street, I got a side on picture of 170 505 at Proof House Junction then not long after arrival, the first of my two photo targets, 170 514, rolled in. With a bit of time to spare until the other one was due, I quickly nipped out to Wolverhampton on 350 113, did a picture of the old low level station and then dashed back on 350 262. Without too much time to wait, 170 506 duly presented itself to my camera for clearance.

Having got those out of the way, I switched my attention to the trams, getting a short bit of new track in the process - sure enough, the one I needed for haulage, 17, was out. Needless to say, I don't need it for haulage any more. Neither do I need it, or 37, for a photo any more. Still leaves 36 for a photo but I may as well leave that until the four additional trams are around unless I get a chance to fill in some time in Birmingham again in the near future.

Having got what was available in tram terms, I jumped onto 172 339 at The Hawthorns to Moor Street, getting there in good time to get the 15.55 to Marylebone, this consisting of 68 010 with 12616, 12605, 12614, 12607, 12608, 10271 and 82302 in that order.

After arrival back in London, 3260 + 3450 were my conveyance to Waterloo for 456 011 + 455 867 + 455 914 onwards to Epsom.

A selection of images from the day is below.

That was the only bashing trip in March although I did have one quick out and back ( plus a very tight inclusion of a 717 on the 14.37 off Moorgate ) for an ear appointment in Gray's Inn Road on the 14th, a shopping trip on the 23rd and a visit to Shanklin on the 30th - again that was a straightforward out and back, being constrained by having the wife with me, so there is nothing else worth doing a report on for the month.

Memory tells me 17 was one of my last two trams to get, and 37 was got on the way back from a much bigger trip. Must admit I did not know there were 4 more trams coming!

Probably more - they issued a tender very recently for 50 trams, though obviously that'll depend on the extensions all going ahead.

Wow that's a lot! As far as I know only 1 of the proposed 4 extensions has yet been authorised? I only recently found out Metrolink have more trams on order too, just when I came ultra close to clearing them for sight!

I'll try to get my Mk5 Sleepers trip report written within the next day or two, but no promises. Meanwhile for the number crunchers I've just updated the new sights, new haulages and new track bashing threads from the trip so there will be an outline idea of how things went from glancing at those threads.

Sorry... got squeezed on time!!!

09/04/19

Setting out mid afternoon on the Scottish bash, with the intention of getting a few other bits in first, I started off from Epsom on 377 122 + 377 328 + 377 323 to Sutton, where I changed for 700 042 forwards to Blackfriars. A Circle ride to Paddington followed on 21543/4 and, having already missed the off peak cut off for the main line services, I had to grab 387 154 + 387 172 to Reading on a semi-fast with the first stop as Maidenhead. Sightings en route were 345 031 at Westbourne Park on the Crossrail metals, 802 112 near Old Oak Common and 66 090, 66 002, 66 151 and 59 002 at Acton Main Line. Maidenhead was playing host to 345 026 and 345 045, while 345 030 was at Reading.

I did not have a huge fester at Reading before required 800 310 turned up and while on this back towards Paddington 33 025 was visible at Southall and a moment later another Crompton, 33 207 with 61306 in tow, came past at West Ealing. I noted 802 108, 800 316, 802 012 and 802 015 at North Pole and at Paddington got 800 310 and 802 103 off my photo hit list.

Seeing the time, I did a quick dash to Moorgate from Praed Street, changing at Edgware Road, with 21305/6 and 21437/8. Just in time at Moorgate to bag 717 002 to Drayton Park, where I took a photo of it, then 313 031 + 313 040 back to Moorgate for 21479/80 back across to Paddington, this time going to Bishop's Road. the reason for going back to Paddington was that I had my mind set on one of those brilliant cheese omelettes they make at Garfunkel's. Having consumed that, it was back to Bishop's Road for 21451/2 to Euston Square, but not before doing a picture of 332 009.

Once at Euston the only photos to be had before I boarded the Sleeper were of 90 049, 87 002 and 390 132. All long since dud for photo, but the opportunity was good.

Now, although the Sleeper departs shortly before midnight, that's close enough to midnight and with such a length of journey that I will cover this under the 10th April below, so all that remains from the 9th now is to display a selection of the pictures from the day:

As noted above, I was on the Sleeper for this night, with 90 049 the haulage out of Euston. The rake was 9801 + 6708 + 10666 + 10543(s) + 10703 + 10520 + 10714 + 9806 + 7604 + 10719 + 10501 + 10690 + 10522 + 10561 and the split at Carstairs exercised 92 010 for the short leg to Edinburgh. (s) denotes the vehicle I slept in.

After an excellent breakfast at the Scotsman Hotel, my first move was to see what trams were out that might have been on my list. This involved a fair bit of backwards and forwards between Balgreen and Bankhead so as a quick summary I got three each off my haulage and photo hit lists and gained a fair number of class 385 photos, plus a couple of 334s, at those two locations.

Following that, I had time for a little bit of 385 bashing, so three returns from Waverley to Haymarket were procured, which yielded my first haulages of the class - see the new haulages thread for which ones; it's hardly worth listing them all just for the short hops each way.

Then it was time to walk up to the Balmoral Hotel to attend a presentation on the new Sleeper trains, which included a very interesting history of the Sleeper service presented by the author David Meara. Upon completition of that, it was back down to the station to board the demonstration run, top and tailed by 73 969 and 73 971 with rake 15007 + 15105 + 15205 + 15314 + 15333 + 15332 + 15331 + 15330.

This ran first up to Dunfermline goods loop for a reversal; the reason for heading up to here was to get the Forth Bridge in for PR photography purposes; the resulting lineside images have been well publicised by now. After reversing, the train ran via Falkirk Grahamston, where we passed 68 006 heading over to work one of the evening Fife diagrams, to reverse again at Larbert, this to get it the right way round to ensure the seated section was at the buffers end at Glasgow Central. The route from Larbert was via Cumbernauld and Coatbridge Central and Kirkwood - which allowed me to get Coatbridge Junction to Langloan Junction marked in my atlas.

During the journey there was an opportunity to see the different grades of accommodation on the train and as I have noted elsewhere on the various Sleeper threads, the Mk5s are a step change upwards from the Mk3s. The ride felt much smoother and the mattresses much more comfortable; there are a lot of small details about these trains in which a lot of thought has been placed.

Anyway... after arrival at Glasgow, I had a few hours to spare to it was time to reduce my list of outstanding class 380 haulages. Again, this was just a load of short hops - three trips to Paisley Gilmour Street and one to Crosshill ( which gave me probably my last class 314 ride back, on 314 214 ) so there is little point in fully documenting them here. Again, the haulages gained are listed on the relevant thread.

Finishing up, I was a bit greedy and had two plain double cheeseburgers from Burger King rather than just one, then prepared to board the Sleeper back to London, which will probably be my last ride on the Mk3s - at least on the Caledonian route. Prior to boarding, I photographed the entire rake. As with the northbound run, I will cover the southbound under the next day's report.

Some pictures from the day - no Mk5 interior shots as I have already put them on the Sleeper threads so little point in duplicating them here:

My haulage back from Glasgow to Euston was 92 028, the empties having been brought in by 92 038. Obviously the rake was the same as the previous night, but this time I was to sleep in 10520. Arrival at Euston was about 40 minutes early, so a quick dash to Old Street on 51549 + 51550 was called for, then to Drayton Park on 313 058 + 313 059. Before long I had 717 006 back to Old Street, returning to Drayton Park on 313 024 + 313 030. Unfortunately the next "ghost" in was dud, 717 007, but I rode it to Moorgate and then back out to Finsbury Park anyway as there was a long fester otherwise until the next one, whereupon a short fester at Finsbury Park yielded that other one, 717 008, back to Drayton Park. I hopped off there to do a picture, then followed it to Moorgate on 313 018 + 313 028.

Proceeding to Paddington with the help of 21479/80 and 21325/6 I found required 800 313 was handy, so out to Reading I went and on this trip there were two 345s side by side on the Crossrail metals at Westbourne Park, consecutive 345 031 and 345 032. Acton contained 66 014 and 66 027, while 66 512 was noted at Hayes and Harlington. Maidenhead sidings held 345 016 and 345 026.

This time I had a fairly long fester of about an hour at Reading before required pair 802 012 + 802 015 turned up, but in the interim 66 512 had come past for a photo, and other movements included 345 034 and 66 605. On the way back the West Drayton area was busy with 66 618, 66 951 and 66 167 all in the vicinity while 66 059 and 59 103 had turned up at Acton.

My next move was 21527/8 to Wimbledon and 455 714 + 455 718 + 456 021 onwards to Epsom, after a very productive 48 hours.

I have a couple more April trips I ran out of time to write up last night, both of which involve IETs. I'll try to get them done tonight or tomorrow.

Sounds like the new sleeper stock will be nice. For what it's worth, I'm not following the sleeper discussions, so I've not seen any of the photos. So I'd have appreciated seeing them in this thread!

Oh, very well then... specially for you... It should be obvious which one is which category of accommodation... ;)

What on Earth is that area in the last one? Doesn't look at all sleeper train-like. The seated accommodation does look reasonable. The sleeping accommodations look really good too!

The seats are reasonable, not as soft as the old seats but compared to the seats on the GWR sleeper they are in a different league.

Time for an IET haulage hunt sandwiching an implant appointment in London!

Starting from Epsom with 455 873 + 455 867, then the quick way along the District to Paddington with 21471/2 from Wimbledon, I did not have long to wait for a required pair 802 011 + 802 014 to whisk me to Reading, sighting 802 114 at North Pole on the way out. Other sightings en route were 66 168, 66 161 and 66 150 at Acton, 66 151 at West Drayton and 345 026, 345 034 and 345 045 at Maidenhead.

While at Reading I did a few pictures; the two I had just come off plus 66 951 and 802 011. 59 005 also trundled through, but I didn't bother to snap it. My haulage back to Paddington, after only a short wait, was 800 311. This time I noted 66 174 at Hayes and Harlington, 66 165 at West Ealing and 66 116 and 66 149 had joined the throng at Acton. 345 035 was moving around at Old Oak.

A few quick pictures at Paddington, namely the one I had just got off, 802 110, 800 312 and 800 316 before riding 21503/4 to Moorgate, nipping up to Drayton Park on 313 037 + 313 046 and then on to Finsbury Park on 313 064 + 313 056 having had no luck hoping for a fresh 717 turning up; of the two diagrams I could have done one was dud and the other was cancelled. Ah well... 700 050 then took me to King's Cross for a short walk to the hospital for my appointment ( ten years since my implant; they do regular follow ups every two years or so to make sure it's all still working properly ).

After the appointment I took 21369/70 back to Paddington where I quickly picked another IET off my list, 802 111 to Reading, little change at Acton with 66 169, 66 168, 66 174 and 66 606 being present and passing 66 618 at Hayes and Harlington, then 66 167 at Slough. Snapped the 802 at Reading, along with 59 002 and 59 205, then a short wait for 800 316 back to Paddington. New residents at Acton were 66 002, 66 031 and 66 107.

Having got back sooner than I expected, there was time for another spin but I had to tolerate a dud 800 308 out to Reading in order to avoid falling foul of the peak time ticket restrictions. This time 59 204 had moved in at Acton and 66 177 was at Southall. One more haulage was to be had, with 802 109 after a moderate fester at Reading, passing 59 004 at West Drayton on the return, and managing to snap 21555/6 at Royal Oak and 21482 in the throat at Paddington - after which I did one of the 802 I had just got off.

The haulage back to Wimbledon isn't noted, which means it was a unit that I had been on earlier in the day, but while at Wimbledon I managed to get 700 053 off my photo hit list just before 455 849 + 455 909 + 456 008 took me back to base at Epsom.

As always, a selection of the day's photographs can be seen below. Not all of the best quality, but good enough to illustrate the flavour of the day.

This was a shopping trip which just happened to see me "accidentally" buy a return to Reading as well... Goodness knows how that happened(!).:lol::lol:

Starting from Epsom with 455 862 and then continuing from Wimbledon on 455 872 + 455 865 upon realising that part of the District was shut for engineering, guessing it would be quicker to go via Waterloo than us a bus substitution. My Bakerloo haulage to Paddington was 3254 + 3447, and very soon after arriving I had a choice of two required units to Reading; the first out was 800 317 so that was my choice, obviously... 66 168 and 66 789 at Acton... Hmm... that's in the exit road facing towards Reading... *photographic cogs whirring in head* and 66 150 was present at Southall.

Sure enough, a long fester at Reading for a required unit back let me get the large logo 66 in my camera - not long after that 802 104 turned up and en router back passing 66 606 at Hayes and Harlington then 66 140 and 59 204 at Acton. Grabbed a picture of the 802 after getting off, then thought I should do what I was supposed to be doing and headed for the Shaftesbury theatre to book the tickets I was under orders to get before making my way to Victoria to get to Thornton Heath for the rest of the shopping. This resulted in more tube haulages, specifically 3237 + 3437, 3253 + 3445 and 11027/8.

Why Thornton Heath? Well, I needed some stuff from Tesco and while my nearest one, New Malden, is on my direct way home being a 10 - 15 minute walk from Motspur Park, I had a Travelcard anyway for the central London bits and the one at Thornton Heath is more or less right next door to the station, so... *shrugs*.

Anyway, it was 455 829 + 455 839 down to there, grabbing a picture of 387 206 in the throat at Victoria, and 455 813 + 455 817 back to Clapham Junction - the timetable missing by -1 a connection at Balham for Epsom; typical - the one time you want the Epsom one to be 2 minutes late it's bang on time... 455 742 back top Epsom from Clapham Junction.

Rather uniquely, below is every single picture from the day!

I will try to catch up with May during this week. I think I also need to do the 18th and 27th April on the sighting and haulage threads... I'll check those tonight; right now I need to sort out the food foe this evening downstairs - the rabble are starting to claim they are hungry...

Apologies but although I have my numbers up to date, trip reports will have to wait - my main computer has a side-by-side Google Chrome crash and this site doesn't seem to work in my emergency back up browser and obviously from another computer I can't attach the photos that are stored in my main computer. ( I'm typing this on my wife's laptop ).

It'll probably be a few days; my IT bod is away this week...
