...but before I start my first one, what is the etiquette in here? One thread covering multiple trips and updated each time or one thread per trip?

As do I. I’m sure they will give me ideas for future trips of my own.

Where's the Mr Burns picture captioned "Excellent" when you need it?!

I've just seen this thread, from what I can tell there is no real etiquette for trip reports. I know us regular reporters have our own threads but it isn't mandatory. It does keep things a little more organised though.

As a regular reporter (I have one for today to post tomorrow, it was meant to be tonight but I'm too tired on my way home to make it as good as I want it to be) I look forward to the reads :)

Right... my first trip of 2019... the plan was to do some IET bashing on the Reading run followed by some photography in London, so I had pre-purchased a Boundary Zone 6 to Reading ticket to go with my Travelcard from Epsom. On the off chance, on the way out of the house, I put a request on the TOPS thread for my last class 153 for photo. This was a Cardiff unit, 153 353, and has proved very troublesome to get and I had calculated that there was atwo hour window in which I could be at Cardiff without being late home.

Lo and behold, what should happen while I was en route from Epsom to Wimbledon on board 455 720 + 455 863 + 456 021 but the result came back straight away ( thank you @37078xotTE ) that it would indeed be at Cardiff, and right in the middle of my time window as well. So a quick visit to the ticket office at Paddington after riding up from Wimbledon on 21407/8 saw me add a return from Reading to Cardiff to my tickets. Must be a rare case of a split costing more than a straightforward Epsom to Cardiff ticket would have been, but if I had purchased that then it would have been an expensive risk had the unit not been on a favorable diagram!

Next, where is the first train out to Cardiff? Stuff the bashing plan - it's now more important to get to Cardiff as quickly as possible in case of any problems on the way down there... ah... as it happens the next one out is a Swansea working and it is 800 035 + 800 005 - and 035 is a required haulage, so that's a good start. :D

On the way, I note 802 104 at North Pole along with 802 106 + 66 756 having just completed that one's delivery run; the 66 was still coupled up... There was the usual stream of 66s going the other way; aside from 59 001, 66 086 and 66 177 in Acton Yard, I also noted 59 204 at Southall, 66 512 at Taplow, 66 555 at Twyford, 66 100 at Cholsey, 66 169 parked at Didcot, 66 413 at Bourton and 66 082 parked at Swindon.

Further locomotives were observed parked up; 66 503 and 66 558 at Bristol Parkway plus 66 024, 70 812 and 70 816 at Alexandra Dock Junction.

Cardiff was reached in good time and as I have long since done all the Valley / Bristol / Portsmouth units I did not really note any down, but I did do a few photos just for the record - these being 150 001, 142 081, 166 218 and then - the target pulled in: 153 353. finally! *click* done. :D

Mission accomplished.

Right... might as well head back, but hang on a minute! What's this terminating from Paddington? 800 013 + 800 033. Hmmm.. I need 033 for haulage... well, it'll be heading back in just over half an hour so let's wait for it... Ah... hold on again, 800 309 just pulled in from Swansea - I need that for haulage as well! OK, change of plan... bash 309 to Bristol Parkway, I know the other pair will be 30 behind, so I can grab a bite to eat while I'm waiting.

So that's what I do. En route, saw 66 506 going the other way at Newport, 66 722 at Swindon and 57 306 on shed at Reading. 66 050 and 66 155 were at Acton Yard. Then a quick dash back to Wimbledon on 21419/20 and 455 918 + 455 709 + 456 024 forwards to Epsom.

I would call that a good start to the year with one photographic clearance and three new haulages.

My next trip, the 14th, I will add in a second post below - I think it'll make it easier for anyone to ask anything about any particular trip without us all getting mixed up if I keep to a one trip, one post rule. So stand by a few minutes and there will be another post below this one...

Oh dear - not a good start; there's a signal failure affecting services to Waterloo, so I'll have to head to London Bridge instead with no Victoria service due for a while. That's a rather slower way to London and I am waiting on some gen so I don't know where I'm going yet... I only have a Travelcard at this stage... which is 377 323 + 377 305 + 377 130 off Epsom.

Between Brockley and London Bridge, the gen on the TOPS thread comes in and it is good ( thank you again @37078xotTE ); this time it is my last 350 for haulage, 350 401, but it is tight as it's literally at the start of my time window... because of the delay getting to London I cannot get the ideal 09.40 from Euston and have to rely 100% on the 10.00. The 10.20 won't do it. So this calls for a dash at London Bridge to get to the Northern Line, fortunately 51725 + 51665 pulled in within a minute of my reaching the platforms, having just missed the previous train by literally two seconds, and gets a reasonable run to Euston.

Now I am dependent on there not being a long queue at the ticket office at Euston. The good news is there wasn't a long queue, the bad news is there were only four or five windows, sorry - counters, open. Aarrgghh!!! I get the ticket - on one of those silly overgrown new style flimsy tickets that is the size of a swimming pool but I now have to run like hell as I've only got five minutes or so to get the 10.00; fortunately it went from one of the nearer platforms. 390 138. Amazingly I manage to get a full view forward facing window seat on the right hand side, so at least I'm not going to be standing in the vestibule for a couple of hours.

What's at the Willesden / Wembley complex? 57 305, 66 953, 66 050, 90 035... hmmm... 050 turned up last week as well at Acton didn't it? At Wolverton 08 629 was shunting reprieved 315 858 with a 47 or a 57 on the south end, presumably to return it to London ( see also the class 315 withdrawals thread ) and 57 308 was the Rugby Thunderbird.

Manchester is reached on time and I quickly make my way over to the 13 - 14 island to await my haulage target. The gen is good, and 350 401 appears at the appointed time; I board it for class clearance for haulage - already got them all for photo.

Disaster!!!

This is where I discover - having missed noticing it off the screens - that the Manchester to Scotland TPEs no longer call at Oxford Road... First stop is Preston... *facepalm*:oops::oops: Trolley attendant sees my face and is somewhat amused when I ask him which end the guard is at - he's actually nearby, and is also somewhat amused when I explain. Well... thank you TPE, having got the other 9 for haulage between Piccadilly and Oxford Road you can see how I managed to miss the omission from the boards.

Half an hour later... Preston. On the plus side at least I've just bagged the short chord at Newton Le Willows for my atlas, on the minus side I'm now way out of position and where is the next one back to Manchester - and I need one that calls at Oxford Road because the plan for the day included the Ordsall Chord.

20 minutes to wait, I'll grab a bite to eat... oh... unexpected bonus; one of the three 158s I need for photo - having been told none were due in Manchester that day I had eliminated them from the plan - is sitting in the south bay. So maybe I can recover something from this timetable disaster after all. 158 853... *click* now grab that food and get the Oxford Road train. that's 185 125 and it's on time. Good. Off we go...

...and back we come. We get turned back after Buckshaw Parkway and return to Preston. Jeez!!! Am I going to ever get away from here?! "Broken down Freightliner" in front of us, apparently. Now I'm not into micro-gricing to Quail level, but I would hazard a guess that more than a few people will be jealous that we reversed over the crossover just to the east of Buckshaw...??? Well, back to Manchester attempt #2, this being 319 377 on the Newton le Willows chord route, which at least gets me the chord in the other direction as well. At least this is also an Oxford Road service and a quick check on Real Time Trains shows that it will - just - allow me time to get the Ordsall Chord in although I'll be later off Piccadilly than I planned for.

OK... I'll do it, so I'm off at Oxford Road ( where I discover that there was no broken down Freightliner; it was in fact rather more unfortunate circumstances on the Bolton area; I can understand the need to be discrete in announcements but it's certainly not acceptable to blame freight for the delays... ) and 185 127 gets me to Manchester Victoria for 185 114 back to Piccadilly after a bit if a fester. Pondered getting a tram back, but no my ticket's not valid on the tram only back via the chord and I can't justify even just the quid or so tram fare for what would only be a ten minute time saving and still not put me on an earlier 390 back south. Plus, it would mean I wouldn't have had the chord in both directions... OK, that's a little bit Quailish in level, which I don't really do, but at least it's satisfying.

Back at Piccadilly it's 390 131 to Euston, 51677 + 51678 to Waterloo and then 455 732 + 455 736 to Epsom.

In summary, a highly embarrassing timetable disaster, compounded by further delays but at least I cleared the 350s for haulage, got a 158 off my photo list having not expected to ( two left now... ) and two new bits of track covered.

Ah I was on Cardiff on the 7th as well and I also had 800 039 (14:26 off Cardiff) but only to Newport. I remember it was a cold, gloomy, grey day. Good to see you got the 153 pic at last. Very interesting read.

Another delayed start from Epsom, this time to ensure someone got on a specific train at Wimbledon before i headed up into London for... whatever! It was 455 849 + 455 712 from Epsom, then 455 729 + 455 864 + 456 002 on from Wimbledon to Clapham Junction. I did have a gen request out, but nobody seemed to on duty or they were but were having to sort out operational messes, which is fair enough - that is their job, after all, and the answers on the thread are just a bonus for the rest of us. We must never forget that.

After a bit of time getting a few photos, in the process reducing my 387/2 list down from four needed to one needed by means of getting 387 201, 387 212 and 387 227 off the list ) it was then too late to go after anything on my gen list even if they were available, to it was time for some IET bashing. First, get to Victoria by means of 377 418 + 377 342 + 377 318, then 21303/4 on the Circle.

Armed with a couple of tickets to reading, I very quickly find 802 008 + 802 021, the latter required, will be departing soon. So that's my first move. Acton has 66 126 and 59 103 present, Slough has 66 150 and 66 765 passing each other and also 345 028 and 345 029 are out testing on the main line.

At Reading I get a quick picture of 802 021 then get a bit to eat, see 66 197 passing through, get a not particularly brilliant grab shot of 66 765 as that comes through and then only have a few minutes to wait for my first required haulage back to turn up, 800 302. On the way we pass a doubleheader going west, 59 206 + 59 102 and at Acton 66 739 is now present. 820 108 provides a new sighting at North Pole and upon arrival at Paddington the wisdom of buying more than one ticket at a time pays off as 800 320 is departing within a few minutes! If I had needed to queue up again, I would have missed it - which would have also meant missing required pair 802 018 + 802 022 back from Reading to Paddington.

Alert to the possibility while outbound on 320, I noted 345 032 testing at the entrance to the Crossrail tunnels at Westbourne Park - presumably this is one of the units running though them. Managed to get a good picture of it as well. On the way back on the pair of 802s I had the third encounter in as many trips with 66 050, this time at Iver. Damn thing's following me around isn't it?!

Anyway, from Paddington to Edgware Road on 21321/2, then forwards to Farringdon on 21309/10 for 700 145 down to East Croydon. It's a roundabout way of getting home when not in a hurry... don't want to get home too early do I? Or she'll expect it every time... From East Croydon to Clapham Junction it is 377 470 + 377 157 + 377 449. Now it's starting to get into the rush hour and I want to be able to sit down on the way home, so let's have a look at Real Time Trains... ah... that goes from Waterloo to Epsom, and it comes in as... this... in five minutes... that's good, so off to Waterloo on 455 714 + 455 725 + 456 007 it is, and stay put at Waterloo, bagging the best seat in the process... Yes, the plan works. I am sitting down all the way to Epsom with a full window and I'm at the back of the train for a quick exit at Epsom having added five IET haulages in the day, so the good progress this year continues. Incidentally, that also puts me past the half century mark on IET haulages as I now have 51 of them...

I think you mean 800 309? Yes - I that would have been the exact same working I boarded... so we have very nearly had an entry in the "unexpected meetings" thread...!!

I should have put some photos in shouldn't I...? I'll amend that now... again, one post per trip for the same reasons.

Here's a few, in order, from the 7th January:

150 001 at Cardiff.
142 081 at Cardiff.
166 218 at Cardiff.
153 353 at Cardiff.

From the 28th, various 387s at Clapham Junction, 802 021 at Reading and 345 032 at Westbourne Park on the Crossrail tracks. Please excuse the mess in the sky on some of the images - I haven't had time to remove the dust artefacts in Photoshop yet!

All the way to Cardiff to phot a dogbox shows a level of commitment above and beyond the call of duty!

Nice reports - thanks for sharing.

Well, it was the last 153 I needed for a photo... and I figured it was time I should prioritise it...

In fact the two remaining 158s I mentioned I still need are the last two 15x series full stop that I need for photo... I'm trying to clear my outstanding older stuff quickly before all the new stuff comes on stream in bulk soon. Apart from those two 158s, there are two 170/5s and a Cross Country 43... that's about it really from the mainstream fleet.

So expect my next few reports to be concentrating on the hunt for those... except my very next trip out which is a pure IET haulage bash ( I'm assisting a member from the Crewe area who is also hunting them the same day and the idea is I'll feed him details from his hit list on what's working which services as much as I can. It's quite possible that although we will be chasing the same fleet on the same day, we might not bump into each other at all - it depends entirely on how much of a fester we both have at which end of Paddington and Reading between required haulages...

Hopefully the weather is kind for you as Reading isn't the nicest place to sit and fester when a cold wind is blowing.

Now for February... although i am doing these monthly at the moment, my intention really is to be rather more up to date, but such is the pressure on my time at the moment... *gallic shrug*

11/02/19

This was a planned IET chasing day, but I set out slightly earlier than I needed to in order to try to get my last Gatwick Express 4387 for photo first... so 377 613 + 377 626 from Epsom to Clapham Junction was my first move, but my required 387 did not turn up although I did get another picture of the loan unit 387 105. I used 377 123 + 377 324 to get to Victoria, and yes that was a six car take on the main line side...

From Victoria I proceeded to Paddington on board 21369/70 and found 800 301 ready and waiting; I had already pre-purchased three BZ6 - Reading return tickets so no need to queue up... En route I noted 66 164 at Acton Main Line and after arrival at Reading I dashed forwards to get a picture of the 800 I had just got off then rushed over the footbridge to catch 802 103 which was already in the platform for my first return. This time I observed 66 748 at West Ealing and 66 112 at Acton.

My next trip out was on 802 007 + 802 017 on the 12.03 Penzance service; I grabbed a picture of 43185 which arrived just before we left. It had been a bit of a "do I wait or don't I?" for the 802s because I knew from available gen that they were booked and I needed both, but they were being held outside with a signal failure and there was a required 9 car set in another platform. In the event I waited and it paid off. On this trip I snapped 21488 at Royal Oak and noted 59 104 and 59 201 at Acton followed by 59 205 at West Ealing.

Reading saw me get a few more photos; namely and in order: 802 007, 802 017, 800 015, 800 022, 800 314, 43185 again ( this being the picture I used on the "guess the train" quiz this week ), 345 028, 800 316, 802 102 and 802 105. The last mentioned was my next haulage back to Paddington, with 66 569 + 66 519 being passed at West Ealing and 802 107 spotted at North Pole. Further pictures were obtained at Royal Oak, this time of both ends of 21479/80. At Paddington I did a better picture of the 802 I had just got off and also one of 800 306.

There was then a fairly long fester before another required IET haulage turned up, this time 800 318 which I photographed before departure - I also got a picture of 21359 just outside the station. Old Oak saw 345 048 with 37 611 having just uncoupled - presumably a delivery run. Acton was host to 59 001, 59 205, 66 091 and 59 104 was still there.

This time the fester at Reading was another short one and 802 001 + 802 002 turned up just as 59 202 was passing through. On this journey, 66 112 was still at Acton and had been joined by 66 050, which if you refer back up the thread to my January trips you will note has been following me around lately! Once back at Paddington I did a quick picture of one of the 802s and also one of 800 319 then made my way to Wimbledon on 21565/6 for 456 020 + 455 728 + 455 731 back to Epsom, having gained 8 more IET haulages meaning I now have 59, leaving just 34 of the GWR fleet to get.

Below are some of the pictures from the day.

A quick shopping trip, but with a star result...

I had to first go to a theatre box office in London to get tickets for a show my wife wants to see, then I quick bit of "top up" food shopping - knowing it was next to the station and therefore very convenient, I chose the Thornton Heath Tesco. Anyway, first, to quickly summarise:

The way out was 455 733 from Epsom to Waterloo, from which I grabbed a picture of 458 512 at Wimbledon and one of 458 501 side by side with 444 043 outside Waterloo, followed by one of 707 007. Then the Northern Line to Tottenham Court Road on 51605 + 51606. After getting the tickets, I used the Central Line and Victoria Line to position myself for Thornton Heath. This meant 92019 + 92150 + 92224 + 92051 and 11035 + 11036, then 455 813 from Victoria.

Shopping done, a quick snap of 387 226 and one of 387 208 passing through while waiting for a train back to Clapham Junction, which turned out to be 455 813 again. Then, would you believe it, while en route the one Gatwick 387 I needed a picture of overtook us! So rather than head straight home from Clapham Junction, I hung around 20 minutes and lo and behold 387 217 duly fell to my camera. Very satisfying, given that I was only really doing an out and back mission without any chasing going on! Straight home on 455 869 after that.

The news that one of my two required 90s had been moved into the LNER pool and was actually on live loan meant the original plan for the day was straight out of the window a couple of days earlier and it became a dedicated 90 hunt instead. Gen on the day gave the workings and a plan was made. It gave quite a bit of spare time, and that allowed a bit more to be squeezed in.

Off Epsom with 377 112 + 377 305 + 377 301, I made for London Bridge and caught 700 009 to Blackfriars where I photographed that and also 700 135 and 700 023 before getting 700 141 to Farringdon and 21059/60 to Moorgate. I still had some time to spare before my squeezed in bit, so rather than fester I rode up to Drayton Park on 313 018 + 313 054 and back again on 313 055 + 313 052. Then the squeeze in bit, 717 012 on the preview at 10.37, my first 717 haulage - and a few minutes later my first 717 photo at Finsbury Park, where I saw 66 152 trundle through and I also took pictures of 700 138 and 700 050, the latter one then taking me to King's Cross.

At that point I discover that the 90 had burst earlier, been fixed and was now on a different diagram - and it was very tight!!! I had seven minutes to get a ticket to Grantham and catch the 11.48 otherwise the mission would fail!!! Had there been just one more person in the queue at the ticket office, I would not have been able to catch it by less than one minute... This was 180 110 and on the way out of London I saw 66 745, 66 750, 717 021 and 717 024 at Hornsey / Ferme Park and brand new IETs 801 101 + 801 102 at Bounds Green. Passing Peterborough I grabbed pictures of 66 731 and 66 024, then one of 66 739 and 80209 at Grantham, which we managed to reach without the 180 leaving bits of engine all over the track on the way.

Not long to wait for the 13.18 and 90 037 was indeed on it, so the mission was successful. The rake was 82205 +11410 + 11310 + 11282 + 10331 + 12305 + 12443 + 12488 + 12419 + 12214. Quickly snapped 43014 and 975984 at King's Cross, then as I had a couple of hours of daylight left, I thought I might as well try for my last S8 photo, 21040, so onto the Met with 21037/8 to Baker Street where I waited a while to ensure that I had seen every diagram that was behind me.

Once my "mark" had come back, I moved outwards on 21067/8, hoping that I wouldn't pass my target in the tunnels between there and Finchley Road. I hadn't. It came past with an Aldgate working with the one I needed the picture of on the south end just after Neasden, so quickly off at Wembley Park then on 21027/8 back to Baker Street. The plan was to wait for it to come back then ride it to Harrow on the Hill and do the picture there. Had it been on the north end I would of course have had to get ahead of it and snap it on approach. At the expected time, 21039/40 did return, and a ride up to Harrow did indeed result in a picture although the light was not ideal.

After getting the picture, back south on 21067/8 ( again! ) to Farringdon, from where I took 700 046 to Sutton and 377 613 + 377 625 onwards to Epsom.

A selection of pictures from the day are below... the one of 66 731 in particular will be of interest as it has the lid off...

Well done getting your penultimate 90 in the book. 48 and 49 will have to do something other than sleepers for me to get them, while as for 90050, I'm not holding my breath!

My last one is 90 040. Active, but not fitted with the LNER compatibility equipment... so very little chance of getting it...

The annoying thing is that about 15 years ago when they were using the temporary top and tail shuttle between Birmingham New Street and Manchester Piccadilly at the time the 390s were being introduced, it was 90 037 + 90 040 on that - and I missed it at Wolverhampton northbound through being on the wrong platform....... didn't have time to wait for it to come back or I'd have stranded myself. Just weeks later, both were in store where they languished until their resurrection last year.

You are doing well with the IETs, well done on getting that 90 as well

Thank you. I'm hoping to get as many IETs in as I can before the "skip stop" timetable comes in on GWR - it'll be rather more awkward once some of them don't stop at Reading...

Agreed there, I will probably do something in the summer time with a weekly season ticket
