All Our Yesterdays – 60 Years Ago –September 1957

Sixty years ago Standard class steam locomotives were still in production with ten locomotives delivered in the month. Diesel shunter production was progressing at a steady rate with nineteen locomotives delivered in the month and the pilot series diesels had commenced delivery. There was also an increasing flow of new diesel multiple units.

BR Eastleigh 2H (Class 205) – 1108/09/10/11/12/13

In the month fifty nine steam locomotives were withdrawn, thirty six being over fifty years old with Midland Railway Johnson 2F Class 0-6-0 58189 being the oldest, having been built by Dubs and Co, entering traffic in January 1878 and condemned seventy nine years later. The majority of these withdrawals were the older main line secondary and branch line passenger engines and old freight engines who were at the bottom of the cascade of power from the continued delivery of the Standards and Diesel Multiple Units. Fourteen locomotives condemned were built post the 1923 grouping, however only four could be considered as a post grouping design.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

All Our Yesterdays – 50 Years Ago – September 1967

For the fourth consecutive month no new locomotives entered traffic. With first generation diesel locomotive building virtually complete, with only a couple of Class 47’s from the Brush Falcon Works at Loughborough, the last ten or so Class 20’s from the English Electric Vulcan Foundry and the on order, fifty Class 50 locomotives still to be delivered lean times were here for the UK locomotive manufacturing industry.

The next ten years or so will be dominated by a mix of locomotive modifications and the withdrawal of the more un-successful or “non standard” types. The main programme of modification this month was Doncaster Works undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine, however this month none were completed.

Steam withdrawals in the month increased from seventy five to one hundred and sixty seven. With the bulk of the remaining steam fleet being made up of Stanier Black Fives, Stanier 8F’s and BR Standards it was to be expected that withdrawals of these types would now form a significant element of the monthly withdrawals. In August fifty three Black Fives, thirty eight 8F’s and sixteen BR Standards were condemned. The slaughter of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet continued with sixteen locomotives condemned. At least two of the steam withdrawals survived breaking up and entered preservation.

On the 5th September 1977 47402 was stationary at Farnley Junction (Leeds) at the head of the 21.50 York to Manchester mail train, when it was hit head-on by the 20.40 Liverpool to Hull DMU. Both drivers were killed and 15 passengers on the DMU were injured, some seriously. Despite extensive front-end damage, 47402 was fully repaired and continued in operational service for a further 15 years.

On the 29th September 1977 the 10:05 Derby – St Pancras was worked by 20037+20190 as far as Leicester where they were relieved.

A number of the above I photographed during there careers and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome
