All Our Yesterdays – 60 Years Ago –August 1957

Sixty years ago Standard class steam locomotives were still in production with fourteen locomotives delivered in the month. Diesel shunter production was progressing at a steady rate with seventeen locomotives delivered in the month and the pilot series diesels had commenced delivery. There was also an increasing flow of new diesel multiple units.

BR Eastleigh 2H (Class 205) – 1101/02/03/04/05/06/07

In the month sixty six steam locomotives were withdrawn, thirty being over fifty years old with North Eastern Railway J77 Class 0-6-0T 68426 being the oldest, having been built at Darlington Works, entering traffic in June 1879 and condemned seventy eight years later. The majority of these withdrawals were the older main line secondary and branch line passenger engines and old freight engines who were at the bottom of the cascade of power from the continued delivery of the Standards and Diesel Multiple Units. Seventeen locomotives condemned were built post the 1923 grouping, however only twelve could be considered as a post grouping design.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

All Our Yesterdays – 55 Years Ago –August 1962

Locomotive contractors were also in production with English Electric building at Vulcan Foundry class 37’s and class 40’s. Also English Electric were building at the Robert Stephensons and Hawthorn works, Darlington class 37’s., Beyer Peacock at Manchester were building class 35 Hymek’s, Brush were building class 30’s (31’s) at Loughborough, North British Locomotive Co. at Glasgow were building class 22’s, the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Co. were building class 27 and Ruston were building class 07’s.

New locomotives:
Class 07 – D2993
Class 08 – D4140/41/42/43/44/76/77/78/90/91/92
Class 22 – D6354/55
Class 27 – D5397, D5407/08/09/10

Class 52 – D1007 Western Talisman, D1036 Western Emperor, D1037 Western Empress
Class 73 – E6005

Locomotives Named: D224 Lucania

In the month steam locomotive withdrawals declined from one hundred and seventy two in July 1962 to one hundred and forty four. The steady delivery of main line diesels and the decline of the Pre Grouping classes would see an increase in the number of the Post Grouping designed locomotives condemned. A sign of the future was the withdrawal of BR Standard 4MT 80103, the first of the BR Standards to be condemned. Another notable steam withdrawal was Southern Railway 4-6-0 30850 Lord Nelson, London and North Eastern Railway V2 60800 Green Arrow and J17 65567 which all eventually entered preservation:

All Our Yesterdays – 50 Years Ago – August 1967

For the third consecutive month no new locomotives entered traffic. With first generation diesel locomotive building virtually complete, with only a couple of Class 47’s from the Brush Falcon Works at Loughborough, the last ten or so Class 20’s from the English Electric Vulcan Foundry and the on order, fifty Class 50 locomotives still to be delivered lean times were approaching for the UK locomotive manufacturing industry.

The next ten years or so will be dominated by a mix of locomotive modifications and the withdrawal of the more un-successful or “non standard” types. The main programme of modification this month was Doncaster Works undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine with the following being completed this month;

D5518/85/86, D5637, D5803/21/26/58

Steam withdrawals in the month decreased from one hundred and sixty two to seventy five. With the bulk of the remaining steam fleet being made up of Stanier Black Fives, Stanier 8F’s and BR Standards it was to be expected that withdrawals of these types would now form a significant element of the monthly withdrawals. In August twenty five Black Fives, twenty 8F’s and eighteen BR Standards were condemned. The slaughter of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet gained further momentum with thirty five locomotives condemned.

17th August 1969 (Sunday)
Stoke/Crewe Works

On this day forty four years ago I paid a visit to Stoke and Crewe. At Stoke locomotives were stabled at Cockshute and on shed were four class 08’s (3291/92, 3798, 3801), eleven class 24’s (5011/20/23/27/33/44/49/63/76/86/92) and one class 25 (5237). Later a tour around Crewe Works produced three class 08’s (3068/95, 3217), one class 11 (12062), four class 20’s (8061/67, 8188, 8303), three class 25’s (7555/61, 7627), thirteen class 40’s (218/39/42/45/73/75/77/81/88, 345/52/64/94), thirty four class 47’s (1501/02/05/06/08/09/10/14/17/28/29/48, 1617/48/77/84/87, 1701/02/12/32/39/44/50/60, 1811/12/58/63/86, 1919/37/60/83), one class 50 (400), three class 73’s (E6012/13/25), one class 74 (E6109), five class 76’s (E26006/16/23/28/48), one class 82 (E3050), one class 84 (E3045), one class 85 (E3077) and four class 86’s (E3111/13/52/93).

Of note is the variety of classes under repair at Crewe works including Southern Region electro-diesels and the Manchester – Sheffield dc electrics which were repaired at Crewe following the closure of Gorton works in the mid 1960’s. Also of note is the large number of the first batch of class 47’s (nine out of twenty). After six years in traffic were they due their first general repair? Finally 12062 would be withdrawn eight months later in April 1970 and was broken up at Derby works in December 1971.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

47428 was badly damaged in a collision with a rake of coaching stock at Cambridge on the 5th August 1977.

37080 working 6K75, Jarrow - Teesport on the 16th August 1977was declared a failure at Thornaby due to a large stone dropped from an overbridge going through the grill on the roof protecting the cooling fan and destroying the fan.

20112 working an engineers train over-ran the loop at Greenhill Junction on the 28th August 1977 and was derailed on the trap points with the locomotive subsequently rolling over onto its side with several wagons piled on top.

Crew training on class 56 commenced at Saltley during August 1977 initially using 56032 later replaced by 56033.
