I'm of the understanding that shunters would be required at short notice, whereas demand for larger engines would be easier to anticipate. The ability to turn a key and start a diesel shunter would make for a significant improvement over the expense and time to light and steam a conventional shunter (and keep it in steam ready for use whenever during a shift).

Reliability would also have been a factor on larger, long-distance work.

As for DMUs, they were useful on quieter routes as a cost-covering measure: no need for a fireman to shovel coal, so staffing costs are reduced.

Definitely and I suppose that the engines and running gear were quite well developed at that time to enable pretty reliable DMUs to be mass produced.

Following trials with a number of early diesel shunter in 1934/35 the LMS were achieving a 45% reduction in costs using diesel rather than steam shunting engines. In 1936 the LMS decided to concentrated on diesel shunter development and not to build any more steam shunting engines. This development was slowed down by World War 2, however it ultimately ended with the British Railways Class 08.

To add to the mix remember that the original Mirrlees engine was uprated from 1365bhp to 1600bhp following the trial with D5545 on sixteen Brush Type 2 locomotives (D5655 – D5670) when they entered traffic in late 1960 and uprated to 2000bhp on D5835 when that entered traffic in April 1962. They were only de-rated back to 1365bhp at the end of 1962 when problems started to appear in the Mirrlees engines of the early 1365bhp locomotives with more than 500,000 miles developing engine fatigue problems mainly centred on the engine crankcase and bearing housings. D5835 ran around 30,000 miles as a "Type 4" without problem.

Your post made me go back and re-read the old early 1960's ABC book I have (the cover is missing so date is uncertain) and yes you're right: the "Type 4" was D5835, not D5677 (as I stated). D5677 was the test bed for the Class 31 engine conversion.

Which on thinking about it makes it curiouser..........the ABC makes it clear that D5677 had the EE engine fitted while the others were still in their type 3/4 configurations. You'd have thought that if there was an issue they would have been returned to normal specification very quickly

D5677 was not fitted with its EE engine until March 1964. followed by D5841 in July 1964 and D5540 in December 1964. The rate quickened from January 1965 with anything upto 9 being re-engined a month through to early 1969.

So I guess Ian Allen got the details in that old ABC wrong? Its a shame the covers missing - it would be helpful to know which year it dates from.
Either that or they weren't actually derated to standard by 1964.......
Neither answer sounds correct, but - based on the book - the impression is that they were still uprated at the time D5677 was converted to EE power. Which is hard to believe. Maybe you just can't trust the detail in the old ABc

Four new locomotives. Fifteen withdrawn.
A direct result of Beeching: closure of lines but retention of the rolling stock resulting in overprovision and a dearth of significant numbers of new motive power for close to twenty years. Instead we soldiered on with antiquated designs, few new orders, with most of the assembly lines and erecting shops being closed or going bust during the late '60s and '70s.
By closing so many lines in such a short period, Beeching and Marples assured the end of significant train building in the UK. What little they didn't kill off was finally eradicated by the order hiatus during the tories privatisation campaign.

You have made photos excellent, Do you think the latest models aren't good? I have a seen a lot of small trains that are available only in UK. 35 years means it really a great value and informative.

21st November 1970.

A walk round the works forty six years ago.

Class 03 (2014/28/53/85, 2154), class 08 (3302, 3512/16/22/33/42, 3674/84), class 10 (4055), class 31 (5512/47/53/55/72, 5679, 5804), class 37 (6700/38/73/96, 6806/10/37/43, 6914/36/49/50/68/72), class 55 (9000/03/06/12/13/15/18/20), steam 60532

Deltic availability appears low with eight (30%) in the works.

I photographed a number of these engines above in later life and they can be seen in this collection.

All Our Yesterdays – 60 Years Ago –December 1956

Sixty years ago Standard class steam locomotives were still in production and diesel shunter production was progressing at a steady rate. There was also a steady flow of new diesel multiple units.

New Locomotives
Standard Class 5 4-6-0 – 73118/19/41/42/43/44/55/56/57/58
Standard Class 4 4-6-0 - 75052
Standard Class 4 2-6-0 – 76075/76/77/78
Standard Class 4 2-6-4T – 80149/50
Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 – 92092, 92115/16/17/18
Class D2/5 – 11182/83 (D2405/06)

Following trials with a number of early diesel shunter in 1934/35 the LMS were achieving a 45% reduction in costs using diesel rather than steam shunting engines. I imagine that the 08 must go down as one of the most successful designs ever.

No, no, no, the most successful 0-6-0 design must be the J72's! Started making them in 1898 and still making them in 1951 well after diesel shunter production started :D

All Our Yesterdays – 50 Years Ago – December 1966

Locomotive building was being undertaken as follows, English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry were delivering the final batch of Class 20’s. The Brush Falcon Works at Loughborough and British Rail Crewe Works were delivering Class 47’s and British Rail, Derby Works were delivering Class 25’s

New locomotives:
Class 20 – D8173/78/79/80/81/82/83/84
Class 25 – D7660/65/66
Class 47 – D1107, D1956

Doncaster Works was undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine with the following being completed this month;

D5638/85/94

Main line diesel and electric production in the month remained steady at thirteen. Steam withdrawals in the month increased significantly from one hundred and fifty five to two hundred and six. With less than two years to go major inroads were now being made into the Stanier Black Five 4-6-0’s (twenty seven locomotives), Stanier 8F 2-8-0’s (twelve locomotives) and BR Standards (forty eight locomotives including another Britannia Pacific). Also this month the 100 year agreement to provide steam shunting engines at Stavley Ironworks ended, resulting in the withdrawal of a seven ancient Midland Railway steam shunting tanks and eight of the Isle of White fleet of O2 tanks were condemned. At least six of the steam withdrawals (41241, 41708, 42968, 47324/27, 47406) survived being condemned by British Rail and can still be seen today.

That picture of 56005. How often as a boy I stood on that footbridge and dropped stones down the chimney of locomotives passing underneath. Then into the buffet to get a free glass of something from my great aunt Mabel who ran the buffet.

All Our Yesterdays – 55 Years Ago –January 1962

Diesel and Electric locomotive building was in full swing (although slowed down somewhat in this period due to the Christmas holiday) with British Railways workshops at Darlington building class 10’s, Horwich building class 08’s and 09’s, Doncaster building class 85 electric locomotives, Derby building class 46 “Peaks” and Swindon building class 03’s. Locomotive contractors were also in production with English Electric building at Vulcan Foundry class 40’s and also English Electric were building at the Robert Stephensons and Hawthorn works, Darlington class 20’s. Beyer Peacock at Manchester were building class 35 Hymek’s and class 82 electric locomotives, Brush were building class 30’s (31’s) at Loughborough, North British Locomotive Co. at Glasgow were building, class 43’s and the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Co. were building class 27 and class 33’s.

New locomotives:
Class 03 – D2178/79
Class 08 – D4115/16
Class 09 – D4113/14
Class 10 – D4081/82/83
Class 20 – D8110/11/12
Class 27 – D5366/67/68/69/70/71/72/73
Class 30 – D5829/30/31
Class 33 – D6583/84/85
Class 35 – D7016/17/18
Class 40 – D372/73/74
Class 43 – D859 Vanquisher, D860 Victorious
Class 46 – D151/53
Class 82 – E3053
Class 85 – E3067

In the month eighty eight steam locomotives were withdrawn with 1962 seeing a real start being made on the more modern designs. Whilst the odd post World War Two constructed locomotive had been condemned in the previous couple of years most notably GWR designed Hawkesworth 84xx 0-6-0 pannier tanks and LNER designed Class L1 2-6-4 tanks this month would see further 84xx and L1 tanks withdrawn along with LMS designed Ivatt 2-6-0’s and LNER designed B1 4-6-0’s.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

All Our Yesterdays – 50 Years Ago – January 1967

Locomotive building was being undertaken as follows, English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry were delivering the final batch of Class 20’s. The Brush Falcon Works at Loughborough and British Rail Crewe Works were delivering Class 47’s and British Rail, Derby Works were delivering Class 25’s

New locomotives:
Class 20 – D8186/87/88/89/90
Class 25 – D7667/68/70
Class 47 – D1108/09/10, D1957
Class 73 – E6048/49

Main line diesel and electric production in the month remained steady at fourteen. Steam withdrawals in the month decreased significantly from two hundred and six to ninety four. With less than two years to go inroads were now being made into all the remaining steam classes with the Austerity 2-8-0’s (twenty five locomotives) and BR Standards (twenty two locomotives including another five Britannia Pacific’s) being particularly heavy.
