Not really get attention as there is not an awful lot that needs saying. However, do thoroughly enjoy each thread and the photos usually prompt memories for me.

(Underlined in my ABCs are 08493, 08514, 20202, 25106, 31278 and 44006, 1022 and 1058 8-) .)

44006 was the only 'peak' I never saw. Although 44003 I only saw as a shell in Derby Works at an open day there!

Saw all the peaks in the 60s when numbered D1-10, it's threads like these that make me feel old! A do enjoy them though, great memories.

These threads aren't getting nearly enough attention!

That's because the majority of people on here are far too young to have any interest in trains from years ago.
I'm of the opposite view as I find modern traction has little variety and is quite boring and I have little interest in it.

To me, the most important thing that happened 40 years ago this month is the end of the Westerns. It's a crying shame that D1015 is unable to undertake the commemoration of the last rail tour which was scheduled to take place at the end of this month because of engine problems.

I very much agree D1009. I just missed out on seeing them being that I was only 4 years old when they finished, but I've experienced Champion on the mainline and in every way it lived up to my expectations.
As an aside and slightly off topic, this months Railway Magazine has a feature on them in 'Practice and Performance' including an absolutely scorching run between Reading and Exeter behind D1005 in 1976, including hitting three figures at least twice during the journey.

All Our Yesterdays – 60 Years Ago –February 1957

Sixty years ago Standard class steam locomotives were still in production and diesel shunter production was progressing at a steady rate. There was also a steady flow of new diesel multiple units.

In the month forty seven steam locomotives were withdrawn, thirty being over fifty years old with Midland Railway 1F 0-6-0T 41699 being the oldest, having been built in Derby Works at the end 1879 and condemned seventy seven years later.

I have photographed some of the above later in life and it can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome.

I'm always sceptical about stories I hear about speeds and journey times from people, as they have a tendency to exaggerate, but hopefully the speeds and times quoted in that column are fully authenticated, and can be checked mathematically. By 1976 it was quite unusual to get decent performances from them as they were not in the best state mechanically.

My first run one was with D1000 Western Enterprise itself in November 1962 from Wolverhampton Low Level to Chester, which to a 14 year old was unlike anything I'd experienced before. I later established the train to have been a Paddington to Birkenhead which changed engines and detached a restaurant car portion at Wolverhampton, so would probably been of no more than 6 or 7 coaches. At that early age (and being more interested in spotting) I'd yet to acquire the skill to record the performance properly, but I did know how to calculate a train's speed using a watch with a second hand and the mile posts, or 22 rail joints to the quarter mile. A new 2700 hp diesel on a light train, and the driver clearly had no interest in hanging about!

Later, I did start to record performance properly, but the only time I recorded 3 figures with a Western was probably in 1976 (I haven't checked my records before posting) on an up West of England through Newbury. The locomotive I adopted as my user name on this forum.

Off topic? It's All Our Yesterdays!!

The article in Railway Magazine is written by John Heaton, who does the regular 'Practice & Performance' column in the magazine and is part of the Railway Performance Society, so I think it's a safe bet there won't be any exaggerations or made up stuff.

Railways Illustrated also has a feature on the Westerns which is more of a potted history, and the next Rail Express (out next week) has an article which mainly focuses on the final months of operation and fleet rundown.

This month would see further post war built GWR 16xx and 84xx pannier tanks and LNER B1 4-6-0’s and L1 tanks withdrawn.

The first electro-diesel (class 73) E6001 was on trials from Eastleigh on the 5th February 1962.
