All Our Yesterdays – 60 Years Ago –May 1959

Sixty years ago the last 9F 2-10-0 Standard class steam locomotives were still in production, diesel shunter production was in full swing as was delivery of the Pilot Scheme mainline locomotives and the first of the production series of English Electric Type 4's (class 40). There was also a steady flow of new diesel multiple units.

In the month one hundred and three steam locomotives were withdrawn, forty three being over fifty years old with Midland Railway Johnson 0-6-0’s 58130 and 58132 being the oldest, having entering traffic in April 1875 and condemned eighty four years later The majority of these withdrawals were the older secondary main line and branch line passenger engines, steam shunting engines and older freight engines being displaced by the continued delivery of the last of the 9F standards, the pilot scheme main line diesels, diesel multiple units and diesel shunting engines. Thirty six engines condemned were built post the 1923 grouping with Great Western Railway 0-6-0PT 7411 being the youngest at twenty two years old..

Diesel and electric locomotive building was in full swing with British Railways workshops at Darlington and Derby building class 25’s and Crewe building class 47’s. Locomotive contractors were also in production with English Electric building at Vulcan Foundry and also at the Robert Stephensons and Hawthorn works, Darlington class 37’s, Clayton at Derby and Beyer Peacock at Gorton were building class 17’s and Brush were building class 47’s at Loughborough.

Main line diesel production in the month increased slightly from the previous month to thirty five and it would appear that class 47 delivery from Brush, Loughborough had hit problems with significant out of sequence deliveries. D6898 would also be the last diesel locomotive built for British Railways at the Robert Stephensons and Hawthorn works, Darlington. Steam withdrawals in the month increased sharply from the preceding few months at two hundred and one condemned (spread over fifty six classes). It was also another bad month for Great Western 57xx Pannier tanks, with twenty six condemned and Fowler 4F 0-6-0s with eighteen condemned. A significant change in the withdrawal policy was the condemnation of seventeen Stanier Black Five 4-6-0 which had suffered some condemnations up until now and the condemnation of no less than twelve BR Standards including seven 9F 2-10-0s with six of them being less than seven years old. Why these modern freight engines were not transferred to replace some of the more ancient freight engines still in traffic is a mystery to me. One final withdrawal in May 1964 was class 33 diesel locomotive D6502 damaged beyond repair following a collision at Itchingfield Junction.
