Why do freight trains often run much later or earlier than their WTT schedules? Do customers worry about this, and what penalties apply when freight trains cause delays for other operators? I've noticed some freight trains can run hours late or early. Why isn't more done to keep these trains to time?

Freight running early isn’t a problem, assuming a) it does get in the way and b) the customer can accommodate it early [if necessary], because it normally doesn’t have to pick things like passengers up every few miles at a set time. In terms of “ running late” it will depend on penalty clauses on a contract. Equally - if you look at something like RTT, all you’re seeing is how it is running to the railway’s timetable, not compared to the customer’s requirements ( ie - the difference between late and too late). To use a passenger analogy - you decide to catch a train an hour earlier than you need to as the later one only leaves you 15 minutes for a 12 minute onward journey. However irritating it might be if the earlier train is 40 minutes late, it doesn’t actually matter.

Freight trains dont have specific times to stop at specific stations for the public. Freight also can be changed to work earlier/later than planned because of loading/unloding

With trains from ports how much of the late running might be because the ship docked late and the cargo didn’t get on the train before booked departure?

How much ‘time critical’ freight does rail move, compared to road where targets can be tight?

They aren't normally just let go to roam free at will. There will be agreement with the yard and signallers/control as to if they can be accomodated.

Empty coaching stock often runs earlier than planned. Same principle, if your ready to go nice n early and you ask inform the signaller you are ready to go. If it work then you have more time in the canteen or even at home later.

Used to do that with the Matisa track recording trolley years ago. It often suited control to get rid of you as soon as possible, giving them more flexibility should the unexpected happen later.
