Apparently GWR will reduce services stopping at Lelant Salting to 1 train per day when a new park and ride opens at the end of May 2019 at St Erth. All trains will call at Carbis Bay and some will call at Lelant.

On the St Ives Bay line, the new Park & Ride facility is planned to open at St Erth at the end of May 2019. This will replace the existing site at Lelant Saltings, which will only be served by one train in each direction. All trains will now call at Carbis Bay, and some will call additionally at Lelant. On Sundays, train services will start earlier at around 0900

Any thoughts?

Agreed. Nice for Carbis Bay to have a bit of a better service too.

Haven't been down that way for a while though... is there anything else at Lelant Saltings that would require a better service to keep serving the station?

Not really, it was built to serve the Park and Ride, which then meant that calls at Lelant had to be sacrificed to enable the right timings up and down the branch to be maintained.

Of its of no significant value, then it's not worth having really.

Unless three is a potential for future development? In which case would an IBM-style "closure" work?

It’s less than half a mile to Lelant, and not much more to St Erth, so very unlikely to see any meaningful use again. Moving the P&R to St Erth has the added benefit that the dwell time as the passengers get on (which can be considerable in the peak) is now effectively eliminated, as it will happen whilst the driver is changing ends. So a much more robust timetable, better services to Lelant and Carbis Bay and also the P&R serves the main line too.

In that case, just close it then. Surely not worth the solitary call.

Sadly the railway isn't that simple. Token service now then the long closure process can begin to close the station.

I assume once the car park is closed it will get returned to nature or have houses built on the land?

Near a bunch of sheds that aren't 66s.

It’s for the latter reason I don't see the station shutting in the long run. For a few years I reckon it will be token services but if and when the houses are built on the current park and ride site there will be strong demand for Lelant Saltings to get a proper service.

Closing a station completely is a long drawn out & very costly political affair. Best to do as they are.

Lelant station is better located for Lelant village, but The Saltings is not that far away anyway. There are new houses and a garden centre near Saltings station. But, by definition, they also close to Lelant and St Erth!
The "Saltings" in the station name are known locally (and more accurately) as the "muds". But BR felt Lelant Muds was not going to attract custom as a station name when they opened the station!
