You can get a day ticket for 10,70€ which covers CP local trains, the Metro and Carris (Tram/Bus). Ticket is loaded onto a disposable Viva Viagem card.

The CP lines covered are the ones to Sintra/Mira Sintra-Melecas, Cascais, Azambuja and Barriero (but you'll need a ferry/Fertagus train to Pinhal Novo to connect with the last one).

Stations-wise, the prettiest is probably Rossio - Alcantara-Terra pretty interesting too, with a short walk to Alcantara-Mar on the Cascais Line.

The day pass isn't valid on Fertagus trains.

There should also be a cheaper ticket for just the urban area. DO be aware they all must be loaded on a Viva-Viagem chipcard, which cost 50 cts.
And do not forget its quaint century old little trams on utmost narrow streets in the old city/Graca area.
The town has 3 terminal stations, the 2 in the west only serve 1 line: Rossio for Sintra, Along the river for Cascais and the Sa. Apolonia old ´major´ one (but not really looking so much) also along river east-side of town- get there from Oriente via local train. MOve between them by metro.

I got caught out by accident trying to use the pass on Fertagus trains and was marched to the ticket office to buy one at the other end!

I had a strange experience there, I had the valid card, took the ferry across to Barriero and out to Pinhal Novo, I went to the ticket office to pay the extra to get me over the bridge and back into Lisbon, but they couldnt take my card and I didnt fancy taking anymore cash out of the machine because I was getting charged 3EU on every 20 EU, I had a chat with a guard on the station and asked him if I could buy a ticket on the train, I though he was a Fertagus guard, I dont think he fully understood what I was asking because he said impossible a few times, so I decided to get the next train back to Barriero, as the train arrived at the platform I jumped on and the same guard followed me on and said I couldnt catch it, I tried to explain that I had a valid ticket to go back to Barriero, and that Id just travelled from there, but he wasnt having any of it, the doors closed and my train left without me, so I had little choice but to chance it and catch the next train which was a few minutes later, a Fertagus train. I would have been quite happy to pay, but no one came round anyway.

I've witnessed an awful lot of gate-vaulting et al in Lisbon so I don't think revenue protection is high up the priority list.

Odd behaviour from the security guard. I try to have Google Translate on hand for when this happens, but I suppose you managed to stick to your plan in any case!

No he was a train guard, so should have known the tickets. So sad to see Barriero, the old station is just a derelict shell and all the land at the side of it flattened, not much left of the works and depot now apart from a few old carriage bodies, it doesnt seem that long ago the 1800s, (class 50 variants), were there.

When I went to Lisbon I was struck by its resemblance in terms of railway geography to Liverpool as it used to be before the Loop and Link were built in the 1970s. Rossio was like Lime Street, a terminus with lines debouching from a tunnel, Cais do Sodre and the Estoril line reminded me of Exchange and the line to Southport, while Santa Apolonia (the only place I managed to buy a CP timetable book), suggested Central, or perhaps Central's early predecessor, Brunswick.

As Barrierowas mentioned. Anything left of that terminus and if yes what services run from it?
The original terminus is still there, (just), but derelict, the land has been cleared at the side of it and a new platforms station just operates on the one line service now

The suburban services around Lisbon are rather interesting. They are basically structured in 4/5 lines:

- The Azambuja and Sintra lines, grouped together as they through run some services, are divided in many different services:

A 1 tph off-peak, 2 tph peak Santa Apolónia to Azambuja service, stopping at all stations. 1 tph on weekends.

A 1 tph Santa Apolónia to Tomar (beyond Azambuja) service, stopping at Azambuja, Vila Franca de Xira, Alverca, Póvoa and Lisboa-Oriente. It's branded Regional and not Urbano, it appears in the timetables but idk the validity of Urbano tickets. On weekends it's only some hours, without a clear pattern.

A 2 tph all-day service from Castanheira do Ribatejo to Alcântara-Terra. It doesn't run on weekends.

A 2 tph peak-only Alverca to Sintra service. Again, no weekend service, change at Braço de Prata. The line to Alverca gets 6 tph on weekday peaks and 1 on weekends.

A 3 tph off-peak, 4 tph peak Oriente to Sintra service. In the peaks it's 6 tph when adding the Alverca trains. 2 tph on weekends.

An all-day 2 tph service from Rossio to Sintra. 1 tph on weekends.

A 2 tph peak, 1 tph off-peak service from Rossio to Mira Sintra-Meleças, that ends very early. 1 tph on weekends.

- The Cascais line is an isolated line, as the Alcântara connection isn't used. Peak service is 5 tph all-stops to Oeiras and 5 tph Alcântara-Mar, Algés, Oeiras and all-stops to Cascais, off-peak there's only 3 tph stopping at all stations to Cascais. Weekends it's the same as off-peak but early and late service is 2 tph.

- The Barreiro to Praias-Sado line is half-hourly, hourly on weekends. Connection at Barreiro to a ferry for Terreiro do Paço or to Fertagus services at Pinhal Novo.

- Fertagus runs 6 tph from Roma-Areeiro to Coina, from which 2 tph continue to Setubal. Off-peak it's just 3, 1 running to Setubal. They have their own ticketing. Weekends it's just 2 tph to Coina and 1 to Setubal.

Nice report ! Any interesting news on their tram or métro network ? Last time I went there, I saw several places with track and / or contact wire still in place but disused. Any hope that some sections might reopen some day ? And how are the metro works progressing those days ?
