Hi there, quick question if anyone could help...

I have an annual season ticket from Maghull (MAG) -> Manchester Stations which I use for commuting to work.

I would like to know if it is possible for me to travel to Chester using my ticket, as it is possible to get trains from Liverpool -> Chester and then Chester -> Manchester and my season ticket is for "Any Permitted Route".

Many thanks to anyone who can help

Cheers

Paul

No.

You could do it as follows with the purchase of one new return ticket for Warrington to Chester:

Maghull-Liverpool
Liverpool-Warrington
Warrington-Chester - New ticket required
Chester-Warrington - New ticket required
Warrington-Manchester

You are using permitted routes in three sets of circumstances:
1) If you are on a direct Maghull-Manchester train, of which there are none,
2) If you are travelling by the shortest route, which is certainly not via Chester,
3) If you are travelling on a route defined in the National Routeing Guide: http://www.atoc.org/about-atoc/rail-settlement-plan/routeing-guide
Maghull is a related station to the Liverpool Group, Preston and the Wigan Group.
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/routeing_point_identifier.pdf page 39

We now need to find which of these routeing points are appropriate by comparing fares:
Maghull-Manchester Stns:
SDS £11.90
CDS £11.00

Liverpool Stns-Manchester Stns:
SDS £11.90
CDS £11.00
Both fares the same as the Maghull fares, so Liverpool is an appropriate routeing point.

Preston-Manchester Stns:
SDS £10.60
Cheaper than the Maghull fare, so Preston is an appropriate routeing point.

Wigan-Manchester Stns
No comparable fares, the SDS and CDS have a destination of Manchester CTLZ.

All four Manchester Stations are members of the Manchester Group
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/routeing_point_identifier.pdf pages 18 and 40

Routeing Permissions for Liverpool Group-Manchester Group are: LY, ML and PS.
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/permitted_route_identifier.pdf page 596

LY allows:
Liverpool-Earlstown-Manchester
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/Maps.pdf page 70

ML allows:
Liverpool-Huyton-Wigan-Bolton-Manchester
Liverpool-Huyton-Wigan-Atherton-Manchester
Liverpool-Huyton-Earlstown-Newton le Willows-Manchester
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/Maps.pdf page 74

PS allows:
Liverpool-Earlstown-Manchester
Liverpool-Hunts Cross-Warrington-Manchester
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/Maps.pdf page 91

The only routeing permission for Preston-Manchester is: NW.
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/permitted_route_identifier.pdf page 786

This allows:
Preston-Bolton-Manchester
Preston-Wigan-Bolton-Manchester
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/Maps.pdf page 85

Therefore, I conclude that your ticket is not valid via Chester.

....Wigan-Manchester Stns
No comparable fares, the SDS and CDS have a destination of Manchester CTLZ....

Routeing Guide Instructions said:
....If you are unsure whether a particular routeing point for the origin station is
the correct one compare the fare from that routeing point to the destination
with the fare for the throughout journey - it is an appropriate routeing point
only if that fare is the same or lower than the fare for the throughout journey
from the origin station to the destination station....

The fare for Wigan to any of the Manchester stations is the Wigan-Manchester CTLZ fare (£3.80 CDS or £5.60 SDS).

That point from the routeing guide instructions has confused me a little.

CTR - MAN
1 x Adult - Anytime Day Return £15.60

MAG - MAN
1 x Adult - Anytime Day Return £16.00

From what I have read in the previous post's quote, because the CTR-MAN fare is less than the MAG-MAN fare it is a valid route? I've obviously missed something here! :)

It applies only to the appropriate routeing points for the origin and destination, not a point along the proposed journey.

ML allows:
Liverpool-Huyton-Wigan-Bolton-Manchester
Liverpool-Huyton-Wigan-Atherton-Manchester
Liverpool-Huyton-Earlstown-Newton le Willows-Manchester
It doesn't help Paul, but ML also allows Liverpool-Kirkby-Wigan (and even Liverpool-Kirkby-Wigan-Huyton-Earlestown), and doubling back through Hunts Cross (or rather Liverpool South Parkway) en route.
