Hi, off to visit a friend for the first time in a year+ towards Southend and yet again there are weekend engineering works turning a ~20min journey into nearly 1h30 tube and bus extravaganza.

It seems there has been works on this line at weekend for years. Is there an end in sight?

I thought the Liverpool Street works was in connection with longer platforms at Liverpool Street itself for Crossrail?

As to Southend, no idea?

I think it has been indicated before that weekend engineering work on the Liverpool Street lines is a fact of life.

GEML users for the past decade like me have mostly gotten into the habit of not travelling south of Ingatestone or Shenfield on weekends because of those wretched neverending engineering works. Take time off work and do your journeys on a weekday or drive if you can't do that.;)

End in sight. OLE nearly done, Crossrail works nearly done. Clearly there will still be disruption from time to time for track work etc.

We will have to think up something else to start. Say 4 tracking Witham-Kelvedon or enhancements to allow 110mph running. Can’t start letting passengers think trains run all the way on the weekends.

Building Beaulieu Park station or whatever it ends up being called (if it ever gets started) should do the trick ;)

I mean, in Shenfield, we won’t know what to do with a) a high street not clogged up with bustitution vehicles and b) a way of using our station to actually benefit from living 25 mins from Central London.

could do with a connection between the up and down at the country end of Witham for all those times services are started from there on weekends during closures. Quite a lot of bang line from Witham to church road crossing during engineering works.

That would help but doesn’t really work out too bad unless they try to run too many trains.

Isn’t that the long term plan to relocate the Kelvedon crossovers to the north end of Witham?
If one is going to Southend itself the LTS from Fenchurch St is an option.
Except the LTS has its own programme of OLE renewal now so loads of closures there too!

ISTR from somewhere that a second phase (pardon the pun) of power supply upgrades is due to take place on the GEML east of Shenfield; the existing Springfield feeder east of Chelmsford has a new air insulated switchgear building and 4 autotransformer bunds in place.

The Mark 1 equipment east of Chelmsford will require renewal soon too.

They seem to have been working on that feeder station at Springfield for years now. It’s been quite a construction site.

Power supply upgrades don’t need anything like the disruption of replacing the OLE, though.

And the Mk1 equipment isn’t in too bad shape. It was designed as an AC system from the off, whereas east of Chelmsford wasn’t.
