Possibly the longest excursion ever organised by BR and all done on an Edmondson card ticket!

The tickets were issued for Liverppol FC's game against Borussia Moenchengladbach in the European cup final in Rome. I went on the trip and as I recall there were four trains from Lime Street. The original plan was for us to travel via Calais and Lyons to Italy. However the threat of strike action on SNCF meant that the route was changed to avoid France.

We therefore went from Lime St to Willesden behind an 85 then a pair of 33's to Folkestone Harbour. After crossing to Ostend there were two long trains formed of ancient Belgian coaches. The route was then Brussels - Aachen - Cologne - Basel - the Gotthard line - Milan - Florence - Roma Tiburtina. The return route was the same. We left Lime Street about 17.30 on the monday and arrived in Rome on the wednesday morning, leaving late on wednesday after the match and getting back into Lime Street on the friday afternoon. Liverpool also won the match 3-1, an unforgettable trip!
