The Society continues to grow with the aim of correcting the tragedy of history when Britain's first main line diesel locos were scrapped in the 1960s. The new loco will look like, sound like and perform like the original twins.

2018 AGM is on Saturday 28th April, 1pm at the Aston Court Hotel, Midland Road, Derby. DE1 2SL

Much growth and activity predicted in the next 2 years with many components available for purchase.

This is a really interesting project. Do you think it’s more likely that if it comes together it’ll be a preserved line only machine than something useable on the mainline?
I would assume that there’d be massive hoops to jump through to get mainline registration. Would it basically have to go through the same processes that a brand new item of rolling stock would? Also at 1600hp would it be able to pay its way pulling a train up Shap for instance?
I suppose I’m asking what sort of load would it be entrusted with on the modern railway?
I wish you all the luck in the world with this. As it implies on the website - there’s some big decisions to be taken at the start regarding the above questions...

This post just inspired me to take a look at their website. I’m pleasantly surprised with the progress being made

This is an impressive project and obviously much work has been done - but a big decision to be made re running....main line or heritage only.

I generally agree with all above, and from a personal point of view it would certainly get my vote above all other suggestions so far. Once again only an armchair enthusiasts view but I think it would fit/look just great operating on a joined up Great Central :)

(Not so sure about usefulness on NR these days though)

Thank you for your replies. In answer to the question you both asked... Everyone would like to see it on the main line. However the costs involved and the limited haulage capacity means that it is unlikely to be worthwhile. However, at the recent AGM, Paul Etherington (Engineer) stated that construction is to undertaken in a recorded and suitable manner such that if a large sum was offered to achieve main line, it could be done. But more likely (and realistically) 10000 will be heritage line only

Ahh you dont know the hidden agenda

Build 10001 ! after all as in Model engineering, once you have the eqpt set up to do one part...you may as well do two!!

Will the new loco be numbered 10002?

If it's classed as a new build I would expect that, but if it's classed as a replica I would expect it to take the original number.

Both the name and stated intentions of the group make it clear that the loco will be numbered 10000.

Hi. sorry for the delay in replying. The Society doesn't have shares, so yes it is based upon donations. In the coming weeks we will be launching widespread fundraising with the aim of purchasing the bogies and restoring them along with the chassis. We have also to purchase parts from other English Electric locos as they are withdrawn. And we are looking for a off-railway unit to rent where we can carry out restoration of components. So yes, donations are the name of the game! Andrew

The loco will painted and numbered as 10000. We could argue the validity of referring to it as another number such as 10001, 10002 or 34003 all we want, but its standard identity will definitely be as 10000. Andrew

It certainly would look good and fit in on any number of heritage railways, especially those with a LMS or Southern background. It is Britain's only pre-BR, steam age, mainline diesel loco!

My dad remembers seeing these two when they were brand new.
Good luck and please keep us updated with progress. I think there’s plenty of us on here that are interested in the project.

Of my remaining notes (and oh how I wish I'd kept them all), I have recorded 10001 on shed at Willesden on 23/3/1963. I can well remember them both growling past South Kenton with The Royal Scot,:'( but how I longed for a Duchess or Princess even though I had copped them all
    Great memories.

Indeed! Although as Poolie has hinted it seems that the early diesel classes perhaps weren't fully appreciated by most enthusiasts back then as they were quite understandably seen as a major threat to the beloved steam fleet?

A good and timely question, to which the Chair provided a response a few days ago:

    Ivatt Diesel Recreation Society
Mainline / Heritage operation of 10000

Following the Society AGM held on Saturday 28th April, we can now make the following
    statement regarding the future operation of 10000;

At this time, the position agreed by the society is that 10000 will not operate on the mainline.

    Several reasons for this decision were discussed at the AGM, the key points being;

 To recreate 10000 will be a very costly exercise. To create a mainline standard locomotive
will increase those costs very significantly.
 Our aim is to recreate 10000 as closely as possible to the original. Mainline operation
would require a number of additional alterations to meet modern safety standards,
which would detract significantly from that aim.
 The benefits of mainline operation do not justify the cost and alterations required. Other
operators are already experiencing difficulties finding enough business for their
locomotives, and we cannot expect to benefit from the type of interest raised by mainline
    steam operation.
 By the standards of todays railway, 10000 will not be a particularly powerful engine,
with an engine rated at 1,600hp. It would not be practical, or in the interests of the
locomotive, to operate the size of trains we would require to generate the necessary
    revenue.
 Maintenance costs for a mainline standard locomotive are significantly higher than for
operation on heritage railways, and as stated above, mainline running is not expected to
bring in high levels of revenue.

I realise that this statement will be a disappointment to some, but I hope you will understand
the reasons given, and continue to support us as we recreate the legend that was, and will be,
    LMS 10000.

It has to be said that that is an eminently sensible and well-thought through decision.
