A very interesting read... One thing the document doesn't go into is the projected time scale or target for completion. Granted that may be difficult due to the project being dependent on volunteers and donations, but it would be interesting to hear when realistically we might see this reconstruction of loco 10000 heading up rail tours up and down the country. Five years, ten, twenty ??

It still seems wrong that the first two diesel locomotives were scrapped rather than preserved....

It's not really too helpful to talk in terms of a timescale, it's all cash-dependent. In terms of time it could be done within 3 years. More likely 10. The more donations received... the old old story!

Thanks - now read the engineering summary.

Incidentally - Red Diamond - isn't that the multiple working system on 56/58? Wikipedia states that the original locos did have multi-working capability but doesn't give details - I would assume either blue star (if that had been invented then), or a proprietary system not used subsequently.

Yes it is a coincidence that Classes 58 and D16/1 both had Red Diamond systems, although the systems were not the same Red Diamond, simply they had the same name.

Here is our FAQ page: https://lms10000.co.uk/faqs

Just seen the news about the move to wirksworth, which should be positive for the group as I guess 58022 will now be undercover in the shed?

The move to Wirksworth will enable us to work on the 58 at our own pace and much more conveniently since parts can then be taken straight into our workshop. However the building is not intended to be one to house the locomotive. it is a place to house and refurbish parts. We are discussing possibilities for long term cover for the chassis.

This all sounds really cool - I've heard bits and bobs about the project for a while now but have never actually looked into it.
It would be amazing to see 10000 running again, even if it is a new-build. I'll have a read of this engineering summary and see what's being done - sounds very interesting indeed :)

You can find more information on the website https://lms10000.co.uk including how to become a member for £2 a month or more (decide your own membership rate!!!) And here is the engineering summary: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1z4NvayL-ZTpAAhDufQETZifbqvYeeoHi/view?usp=sharing

it will have been 10002, as this will be technically a new construction of the design, with required design code change due to chassis donor etc

The reproduction steam locomotives that have either built or created have followed on in number sequence,so why not 10002?

Yes it is the third D16/1 and logically one could call it 10002. in fact I personally would like to see it run as 10002 while in primer during running in. However the Society has consistently said that it will be dressed to represent the original loco and so will spend most of its time as 10000

There were suggestions to BR in the 1960s that it ought to be preserved. One story claimed that BR were not interested because some "bits" could be used as spares for other locos (presumably Class 40 or 37)

We have the minutes of the meeting where they decided not to preserve either of them. The reason given was that they did not look like they did originally..... I know, I know.. Don't shoot the messenger

Today we had a fantastic working day at Wirksworth, mainly working on the 58. All the engine bay roof panels and the body side frameworks were moved up to the workshop. We collected many nuts and bolts and other bits and pieces from the engine bay, and removed a large amount of rust and muck. We assembled a complete set of orange cab panels for the cab that we will be keeping. Finally we tarped over one end of the loco. The other end will be covered over when we have completed a few more jobs on it. Thanks to all our volunteers today - Tony Thompson, Phil Stainbridge, Alex Homer, Paul Godridge, along with regulars Tony and Bernard.

Another step forward with the cab removal. 5 of the 8 mounting bolts are out. We have also made progress on disconnecting pipework and electrical connections, and done a little more preparation on class 58 cab front parts. Another interesting item turned up recently - an ID tag from 37222 on one of our Reavell exhausters.

It would be helpful to be clear that 58022 is the donor for the recreation of the Ivatt LMS diesel and isn't being restored in its own right.

I couldn't have put it better myself. Unfortunately threads keep closing here on RailUk Forums, otherwise we would have a continuous thread on which that information could be easily seen.

58022 was bought from a scrapyard by a private individual and donated to the Ivatt Diesel re-creation Society on the understanding that it would be used for the purpose of creating a D16/1 locomotive as a living legacy for Britain's first successful mainline diesel locomotive, 10000.

You could try asking the mods to reopen the old thread, I'm pretty sure they would give it consideration

Yes indeed we would, especially when it comes to a thread that requires updates like this.

@AHoseason - I’ve put all of the relevant posts into the one overall thread here now so that anyone who wants to follow the progress of this fascinating project can see it all in the one place.

If there’s a gap in the future and the forum software has automatically locked it after a certain amount time then just send me or one of the other mods a message and we’ll unlock it for you. :)

What is going to happen to the old 58 cab? Is it going to be reconstructed as part of the new loco or sold / scrapped?

I can't imagine it can even remotely be used in the new build - totally different look. I imagine it has raised some money as scrap metal.

I’d quite like one for a garden shed…

For those that have subscription access to WNXX there are four photos of 58022 on todays news section, I particularly like the one with the chap stealing the cab to fit to his vehicle, it would seem that LMS10000 have given an update as well

The Society continues to grow with the aim of correcting the tragedy of history when Britain's first main line diesel locos were scrapped in the 1960s. The new loco will look like, sound like and perform like the original twins.

2018 AGM is on Saturday 28th April, 1pm at the Aston Court Hotel, Midland Road, Derby. DE1 2SL

Much growth and activity predicted in the next 2 years with many components available for purchase.
