BREAKING NEWS!
We are very pleased to be able to announce that we have agreed in principle a price with Werkgroep 1501 in Holland for the purchase of three MV 146 traction motors, identical to those in our EM2 bogies. These motors have been stored indoors with the vents covered, and should require only minimal attention to make them useable. These are quite possibly the last available MV146 motors still in existence anywhere in the world.

Our lead engineer will soon be taking a trip to Holland to inspect the motors and discuss transport arrangements before the sale is formally agreed.

This is a huge boost to the project. Not only will it give us three spare motors, the cost is around 20% of the cost of refurbishing the motors we have, saving us literally tens of thousands of pounds. It also means that the timescale for getting one of the bogies completed with its motors installed just got considerably shorter.

We would like to thank Werkgroep 1501 for agreeing to the sale. We will post more details as the process progresses.

If you would like to make a donation towards the cost of the motors or transport to the UK, please visit the website at www.lms10000.co.uk/donate. Thanks.

OK. You’ve got the better of me,
I’ve just chucked a bit of money in...

Mainly because you seem to be doing the right things in the right order and in a professional way.
I am impressed with what’s been achieved so far. Well done to all of you.

And I can only echo Mr Cowleys post above so I'll follow suit...
It’s an exciting project that seems to be going somewhere.
There’s an awful lot to do, but if things keep moving forward as they seem to be then I might consider joining and paying monthly later in the year.

Thanks for the quick response. I was party to a 2 hour telephone conference call with other trustees. Quite overwhelmed by the progress currently being made and the amount of goodwill and expertise being offered free of at cost by experts in the railway industry. Looking forward to progress.
Thanks for the donations. Money is, sadly, the evil that is needed by such projects to make em complete. So your willingness to donate is much appreciated.

I've been keeping an eye on this project for some time and as others have said this looks to be a well run and viable project. So I have finally bitten the bullet and donated to the cause. Now don't let me (and others) down!

Yes it's certainly aroused my interests and like you say it all seems to be run in a very orderly and professional manner, very impressed so far!

Thanks for your encouragement. The time and affort that's been put into it makes me express the same sentiment, with some good confidence today!

Chairman, Mark Walker writes:

Last night we held our first management group telephone conference. Getting everyone in one place for a meeting is very difficult, but the application of a little technology got almost everyone together at the same time.

Although there is much going on, I hope you will all understand that we cant always shout about things as they happen, either because we aren't 100% sure something will happen, or because the person we are talking to doesn't want us to, or because we aren't sure which particular route we will take on a specific item. We will tell you as much as we can as soon as we can. For the time being, what we can say is:

We are working with a specialist brake company, who have said that while our original plan to use the 58 braking system is viable, certification of the design would be easier and cheaper if we rebuild the original EM2 bogie braking system. The issue here is missing/life expired parts, but we are looking at the options. We have also had it confirmed that it is possible to create a dual brake system using the existing brake frame with the addition of a combination of class 56 and 37 parts, and we have received an offer to design the full system.

We have made a fantastic contact at an electrical company with lots of rail industry experience. We now know roughly what the range of costs will be to refurbish the existing alternator and traction motors, from a basic overhaul to a full rewind and armature rebuild. We have had it confirmed that it is possible to rework components from the class 56 electrical cubicle to replace the missing items in 58022, and a contact who is able to do so.

We will hopefully soon be receiving a considerable amount of technical information about the original EM2 bogies and the class 58 chassis. We already have a full set of drawings for the EM2 bogies, but the additional information will be very useful.

Speaking to the contacts above has led us to another contact with considerable experience in loco chassis design, who will be a great help. We have drawings of the existing chassis and our proposed design for the 10000 chassis, and we now have the expertise available to get us from one to the other, and produce a chassis that will be safe and certified.

A technical document is being produced to complement the existing business plan, detailing precisely how the different parts of the loco will be constructed.

So, there is lots going on, and all good. Its all exciting stuff, and as soon as each aspect of the build is confirmed, we will let you know.

We have had several excellent positive comments over the last 24 hours. People who were waiting to see if we were 'really going to do it' before making a donation or becoming a member, who are now convinced its going to happen and have donated. Are you a believer? If you are, you know what to do..... www.lms10000.co.uk/donate

What is the photo of, please? Something to do with the braking system mentioned above it?
Is it a set of dials attached to the main generator?
The top dial is a rev counter. Are the other dials something to do with amps going to the traction motors?
(Preparing myself to look silly here)

Hi, no its controls on our English Electric 16SVT no. IH1861. Braking systems are not so photogenic. Here's 27000. Not great photos but ...

Yes I think you are right. I too have to be careful when labelling photos since I'm not an engineer whatsoever. It's the 16SVT. Still looking for photos of the braking systems, but here's one I took earlier! 58022 bogie and cab, showing the substantial chassis frame.

Looks like the bottom row of dials are air pressure gauges to me. I also have a question, when looking at shots of the 16SVT on the website every cylinder head case looks to have a gauge on top, never seen this on the later units fitted to EE Class 40s/50s, would the original power units fitted to 10000/10001 have been so equipped?

I see what you mean now I’ve looked at a better screen.

Re the 58 - That’s some heavy duty chassis on that isn’t it? Does anyone know what the chassis weighs alone?

That really struck me, absolutely massive isn't it, that chap looks positively diminutive stood beside. Wouldn't have a clue about its weight but the 58s topped the scales at 130 tonnes so allowing roughly 25 t apiece for the bogies inc. traction motors plus say another 25t for the power unit and maybe approximately 25-30t for superstructure and other equipment perhaps around 30 tonnes?

Ah...so it seems they were then, I wonder if design advancements over time made it possible on the later versions of this engine to group all 16 gauges on one centralised panel making life easier for the fitters especially when working in the somewhat tight confines of a locomotive engine room? Many thanks for attaching the video clip, most interesting.

The Ivatt Diesel Re-creation Society are very pleased to say that we have today signed the lease on our new storage shed and workshop at Wirksworth on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway.

This is not a loco shed. That is still a project for another day. But it is just what we need to store our growing collection of parts and start work on our equipment.

Our thanks go to Mike Evans and Leigh Gration at the EVR who have been really helpful in getting everything organised for us.

There is a full report on the shed in our newsletter which is going out to members this month. To sign up check out our website at https://lms10000.co.uk/membership

Today was our first proper working party at the shed at Wirksworth. Thanks to Mark, Michael and Tony our Trustees and new volunteers Andrew and Bernard for coming along. A skip was filled, but we have cleared enough undergrowth and ancient junk to fill another next week. We also started pulling out around 50 old bus tyres left by a previous tenant. It’s starting to look good, and next week we will start painting. An excellent day all round.
