Just wanted to mention that 5 LNER TVMs are now selling rovers as a pilot rollout of new functionality. The pilot TVMs can be found at Kings Cross Doncaster York Newcastle and Edinburgh.

Good news. How are the trial TVMs in question identified?

Do all the TVMs, or at least all the LNER TVMs, at King's Cross, Doncaster, York and Edinburgh offer this facility, or only certain ones? If it's only certain ones, is there any way of identifying which ones they are, or do you only find out once you've touched the screen?

Do they offer all rover and ranger tickets for everywhere in the country whether they are valid on LNER or not (and whether they are valid from the station in question or not)? And can you buy them in advance of the day of travel or only on the day of travel? If the latter, do you know if LNER plans to make them available in advance at a later date, just as I understand that Northern plans to at some point?

One at each location currently, as I said further up the thread the only way to find a TVM number is to touch the screen , so once you do that you'll see the Rovers button. The Newcastle one is outside WH Smiths, the right hand one of the two. They offer all Rovers but as with the Northern TVMs they can't be advance dated (both use the same software).

In entry #1 at the start of this thread you said TVMs offering this facility were currently available at King's Cross, Doncaster, York and Edinburgh. And Newcastle as well?

As Doncaster also has a Northern TVM that already sells rovers and rangers (as do all Northern TVMs) that means there are two TVMs there that offer this facility: one Northern and one LNER. I can't remember if York and Newcastle also have a Northern TVM.

Why does it need to be a pilot?
Surely having tickets available to buy from a TVM (as Northern already do) should be the norm.

Why does the railway always take so long to do the right thing!

Didn't realise LNER could deal with selling a ticket valid for more than a single journey! :D

That's testing! Which we'd hope is done before rolling out the pilot.
Testing in advance and pilot in live. It's an accreditation requirement and I have seen many releases rolled back because of something found in pilot, as @Wallsendmag will attest.

Here's what you get after tapping the Rangers and Rovers button:

Not keen on it showing the most expensive tickets first, eg 7 day North East.

Would be good to show the Type of rover then once clicked it shows you the options of ticket available.

It could even have areas of country then the types of rover.

It's part of the standard Flowbird purchase flow to have a "Popular Tickets" screen first and then have to click through to get the full list.

Inclusion of the Spirit of Scotland, Kent Rover and Cotswolds Ranger on that screen are somewhat dubious though!

It’s not working properly at present for me - get a variation of this for any ticket I tried. (KGX)

Hrm...Still, that's part of what pilots are for.

I know Chiltern have had Rovers & Rangers enabled across their entire fleet, so it'd be interesting to know if there's the same issue on their machines.

I’m off to the West Country for a week but I’ve shared the info with the LNER team

Haven’t been able to recreate this do you have a Railcard ?
No. I'm passing back through in an hour or so and will do some further testing, I have a theory.

Neither the Chiltern nor the LNER TVMs seem to sell Welsh rovers, and the Chiltern ones also don't seem to sell Scottish rovers apart from the Scottish Grand Tour. The LNER ones do sell Scottish rovers, though, as you might expect as LNER serves Scotland.

Also, neither the Chiltern nor the LNER ones seem to sell the Derbyshire Wayfarer, maybe because it's a Derbyshire County Council product rather than a National Rail product. The Northern TVMs do sell them, though (although to be fair Northern does operate in Derbyshire whereas Chiltern and LNER don't).

I found the (one) machine at Kings Cross last night selling rovers and rangers but was somewhat disappointed to see that they can only be bought for that day, and not be post dated. Not particularly helpful at 11pm, particularly given almost none of the tickets are valid anywhere near Kings Cross.

I’ve had a quick look at this as I passed through Kings Cross just now.

The list of railcards needs updating to include Gold Cards as some rovers and rangers qualify for a discount (eg Anglia Plus Day Ranger, Thames Branches Day Ranger) but this isn’t an option.
