I imagine no drags this year and just 800s on diesel?
The fact that there have been driver training runs says otherwise.

If there are going to be any drags, then 1S04 is likely to be one as it spends 20 minutes at Carlisle, significantly longer than other workings that spend as little as three minutes at Calisle.

Has an 801 been dragged before at LNER?

I thought the Thunderbirds had been dropped. Its probably just a pathing allowance to fit into an available slot both south of Newcastle, west of Newcastle and north of Carlisle.

I'm of the impression that nearly every time something catastrophic has happened to an Azuma they've eventually been rescued by the Thunderbird after trying to rescue them with another unit has failed...

Doesn't sound like a tremendous option for the Tyne Valley eh!
Don’t be too surprised if they make it onto these services as they frequently make it to Harrogate (which is a very similar route in terms of gradients and line speeds) and also onto diverted Leeds to Kings Cross via Hambleton services.

This is unlikely considering that 2x5 Azumas rarely make it to Newcastle due to power shortages in Northumberland. I think they make it to Newcastle when they terminate there.

Because they are the ones you hear more about...

Sure, hardly encouraging though when LNER are about to ditch their thunderbirds...

(though I guess we ought to take this to a new thread if we're going to continue ;) )

I’d not expect any MK4 drags.

I would expect either the 9-car Bi mode units, 2x5-car Bi mode units, or 1x 5-car Bi Mode + 1x 5-car Electric unit (coupled) to feature.

the 9 car bimodes already do aberdeen/inverness runs so they will be used and id guess additionally they’d use some 2x5s aswell

Unlike previous years, RTT seems to have Carlisle down only as an operational stop when usually it's been a stop for passengers too.

I wonder if this will change or whether it's a permanent alteration.

I believe that is the confirmed plan for this year.

Too soon to say regarding subsequent ones.

Seeing as it’s the eve of, I notice that Saturday’s 17 and 24 of October also have diversions, as well as the dates listed in the initial post.

I note that they are using 10 car sets (2x5) wherever possible today instead of 9 car sets between KGX and EDB.
Is the power of the two 5 car sets more than that of a 9 car set when running on diesel power?

Yes if they’re both 800s, but no if they include an 801.
A 5 car 800 has 3 power units, a 9 car 800 has 5.
801s only have the single “rescue” power unit.
So a mixed pair 800/801 has 4 power units, this will be adequate for the Tyne Valley leg.

I’d imagine more - A 9 car set has 5 engines, whereas a 10 car set has 6.

I believe the 800 actually drags the 801, the engine is running only to provide hotel power.

That is certainly interesting because I asked about Joint Line diversions some time ago with 800+801 and got the response it wasn't going to happen. Allocations today appear to be:

No Lincoln or Harrogate services today (other than 1D28 1833 London Kings Cross to Harrogate using 800110).

So, it seems they have no choice but to use 800+801 formations due to the fleet size. 9-car 800s listed above are 800101/02/04/07/08/10/12/13 (8 units from 13), 5-car 800s listed above are 800204/05/06/07/08/09/10 (7 units from 10). 800103 has done Newcastle - Kings Cross - Leeds - Kings Cross - Newcastle today. 800105/06/11/201/02/03 don't appear to be working.

Funny that, isn’t it. I had a peek at a few services on RTT before posting earlier, because I‘d noticed there’d been a few discussions recently about 800/801 pairs running on extensions off the wires around Leeds, that had also suggested it was likely.

I doubt the speeds or power required on the Joint Line are much different...
