Yes, correct. Only traction fitted with ERTMS can work over the Cambrian route so restricted to all ATW 158s and the 97s which you mention and which are fitted.

But if four or five got equipped, they could then run on the cambrian.

Anything fitted with ERTMS could run on the Cambrian, assuming it is cleared. Are the 67s cleared for use North of Dover Junc? Not taking ERTMS into account of course.

You could always just fit portable ERTMS equipment. Something WCRC were/ are looking at so they can run their steamers up to Pwllheli.

A pair of Class 67's top & tailed a charter to Barmouth back in January last year. Was the first (& so far, last) of the Class on the route, as ERTMS was installed for the rest of the route shortly afterwards. Not sure if it was allowed as a one-off or not, but they have ran north of Dovey Junction to Barmouth, at least.

So far, the only locomotives fitted with the necessary ERTMS signalling equipment are 97302, 97303 & 97304. 97301 is ready for ERTMS fitting, it just hasn't been installed yet. Apart from the Class 158's running on the Cambrian, you won't see anything else on passenger workings on the Cambrian for the forseeable future.

A friend claims locomotives are now banned on the cambrian (except class 97) due to new speed limits in force. Is this true?

Not totally true but.... We can still run engineering trains like class 66's but it has to be in a conventional T3 possession with dets and PLB's. It does occasionally happen.

Not as simple as that as I believe the ERTMS is installed in the loco/onit and unsuitable for portable use unlike RETB equipment.. You would have the problem of Driver familiarity as intensive training is required for ERTMS use.
Possible, perhaps, to be hauled by one of the 97s attached on the front but sttention would have to be paid to the length of the train for crossing loops etc., The annual steam trips that took place at the end of August had to be abandoned last year and this year due to ERTMS. The jry was out trying to find a solution but this seems to have gone dead now.

I agree with your last quote "Jury" a lot of other aspirations have gone dead as well, like passenger capacity & extra services/

would it not be possible to fit the ERTMS equipment to a dedicated cambrian mark 1 BG or suchlike that can be attached to charters due to traverse the route? Surely then all you would need would be portable monitor equipment that could be hung in the cab somewhere and a wire long enough to reach?

No, I should hardly think so. This ERTMS equipment is very specialised and sophisticated and still ij it@s early stages with occasional hiccups still occuring.
