ICONIC red London buses will take to the city streets to transport commuters while Liverpool Central station is closed.

Central, the busiest underground station outside London, will close on Monday for a £20m refurbishment.

A fleet of the famous double-decker buses will act as a replacement bus service, running every 15 minutes between the city centre stations.

As well as the buses, 100 staff will be deployed to key stations, including Moorfields and Brunswick, to guide people to the city centre.

The station improvements include new escalators, a wider concourse, new toilets and customer seating for the disabled and elderly.

During the closure, there will be extra carriages and queue streamlining at Moorfields to ease congestion during rush hour. The Wirral line platform will reopen on August 25 and the Northern line platform on October 22.

Merseytravel Director of Integrated Transport, Alan Stilwell, said that the investment would provide a “central showcase” for the city centre.

He added: “We have worked and campaigned long and hard to bring this investment to the region, and we thank passengers for their patience and understanding as we work with our partners to deliver the scheme with as little disruption as possible.”

It will be interesting to see the double deckers outside of London.

And I can't see them using Routemasters (as illustrated in the Liverpool Echo article)! :D
To be fair to the Liverpool Echo, it is MerseyTravel that are saying iconic London Routemasters will be operating.

Britain’s busiest underground station outside the capital is closing on Monday for a massive refurbishment – and Liverpool’s affected commuters can expect a taste of London life thanks to a fleet of iconic Routemaster Red Buses.

The world famous double-decker buses will act as a replacement service which forms part of a wider raft of initiatives by Merseyrail, Merseytravel, Network Rail and City Central BID to minimize the impact of the closure.

Seriously they put that in a press release? My money is on some ropey Tridents.

Plus ex-London buses are two a penny. Stagecoach Southwest have a sizeable chunk of the initial S-plate Trident batch from London (though with an impeding shuffle as new Scania Enviros arrive in Torbay, releasing 04 plate Tridents; they may not be around much longer). But most ex-London stock gets a refurb and repaint before entering service elsewhere. I'm assuming the PR people are trying to put a good spin on the fact these buses haven't been refurbished..
