    Hello all,

Spent a first spotting/photting session at Gatwick Airport last month. Went down by train from Salisbury (drove down from Trowbridge) so I could use my Network Railcard discount, and saved driving all the way there and back.

Was a very nice day weather wise, no problems from airport security, and copped 73 new serials I needed.

Great pics, I especially liked the long shot of the A380.

Minor point of pedantry on the last pic, it is indeed a China Airlines aircraft, but not Air China (you mention both).

Great pics there! Lots of variety!
What camera did you use out of interest?

Thank you! Tried a long distance just to show the size of a huge bird coming over! That second picture doesn't really do it justice, that 380 coming by you there looks flippin huge!

Edited the last picture thank you, not sure why I put Air China!

    Thank you very much!

I used my Nikon D3100, initially used a Tamron 70-300mm lens but was too big for the heavies, so used the 18-55mm lens which sort of worked, but was too small for the smaller stuff, so most those A319's/A320's are massively cropped. Need to invest in a 200mm lens which might make it easier.

Will put some up from my German spotting holiday from last week too soon.

Great! I use a Nikon D3200 myself, but I find that the 18-55mm works well for my shots (although not planes!)
What settings are you using on the camera, as the ISO looks a bit on the high side?

I was particularly interested in that photo as I am travelling with that very airline on that very route later this year!

I like my 70-300 over the 18-55 for some reason but the latter does work well yes, it's just not enough reach sometimes for aircraft, and the 70-300 can be too big for a side shot of an A380 for example.

Can't remember what I was using but according to the EXIF I was on ISO400. Thinking about it, I think it was because I was looking at the pictures on the camera and thinking 'they look dark better crank it up'. I've noticed sometimes they look dark but when I get home and look at it on the TV, they are not dark at all. Should have used ISO200 (or 100?)

Interesting! Reasonable cost I assume for a lo-cost operator? First time I've ever seen one of these, but I'm sure I've seen a picture of a Level from a different country (F- registered or something?)

I would use ISO 200, unless you're taking night shots.
If they look dark, you should adjust the shutter speed or aperture instead!

Was the spot you stood in very far from railway station.

    Great shots.

    Thank you Anthony

I was going to try and find the spot near the station down the perimeter road, but as the wind was coming from the East, they were landing on runway 08 (at the other end, so they were taking off towards the station).

I used the Purple Parking shuttle bus and walked to the spot (no more than a 5 minute walk). I managed to get the bus back mingling in with those waiting for a bus, though apparently one photter got kicked off the bus and walked back to the terminal (bloody long walk!) if that was me I'd have tried a taxi even though it wouldn't be cheap.

The spotters guide did suggest using the free Purple Parking shuttle if coming by train so I suspect there isn't many problems using it. I've always used parking shuttles with no problems to get to spots
