If you’re getting a train from place where you can buy a Travelcard as part of your ticket use that, otherwise use your contactless debit or credit card while in London

Simplest is a contactless credit or debit card for each person. If that's not possible, a pay as you go Oyster card (deposit £5 per card) for each person can be obtained from the first tube station you visit but cannot be bought on buses! Contactless avoids the potential problem of returning the Oyster Card and getting unspent credit and the deposits back.

Don't forget that each individual aged 11 or over must have their own card.

Will you be travelling with children or teenagers?

They do indeed, but unless you've got a railcard it's always going to work out cheaper to touch in/out using Oyster or contactless credit/debit card.
