Hi All

Travelling into London on the 28th July and looking for some advice.

Last time we went you could get a Zone 1 Travelcard for £6.80 (I think) it was that long ago i cant remember the price.

We're only going to be staying in Zone 1 and using the tube only.

I've looked on TFLs site and cant seem to seem a Zone 1 Travelcard

Anyone help with the best ticket to use?

Cheers
Scott

Hello Scott

There isn't a Travelcard for only Zone 1 anymore. You can buy a Travelcard for zones 1 - 6 although this is much more expensive than the £6.80 you once paid. However that is in fact the the price of the zone 1 - 2 Oyster daily cap so this is a much better option for you.

Simply top up an Oyster card and only tap in and out of stations in Zones 1 and 2 and once you reach the the cap of ~£6.80 will not have to pay for anymore journeys for the rest of the day (until 04:29 the following day)

Though if the intention of the OP is to remain on the Underground riding around for a considerable period of the day rather than visiting various attractions then a Travelcard may still be required otherwise they could bump into maximum journey time limits and end up with incomplete journey charges.

Very true, although most people will not be continuously travelling around the network beyond 70 minutes at a time and leave at least 2 minutes between taping in and out surely - making sure to remember to!

The OP didn't specify the reason for coming to London or using the tube so without them telling us I guess we can't really tell which is the best option for them. But Oyster always wins hands down when it comes to cost, even though it does have the limits you pointed out above

Not even an Oyster is required, any bank card or credit card with the •))) symbol will work just fine (or indeed Apple Pay / Google Pay).

Just discovered that you can register your contactless card after the event and still see the journeys.

You can even see the journeys during the event, a feature unavailable on Oyster. You can normally see details of your card validation within a few minutes. If you are on a train or Tube, it will show that you have tapped in and not tapped out yet, or sometimes it will automatically complete the journey with a best guess based on your previous journeys, until you actually tap out.

Registering is also useful in case you forget to tap out, so that you can resolve the journey online.

yes, that surprised me as well!

There are no data protection implications as the card is your card. They can't show previous (before registration) journey history on an Oyster card because it may not have been yours at the time the journeys were made.

There’s also the new TfL app which allows journey history views, instant Oyster top ups etc.
