I want to book a trip to London from York on the 23/06/2015 after 07.00 and return to York after 18.00 the next day. I also want a paper Travelcard zone 1 to 4 for both days. Is it possible to book it into 1 ticket or do I have to buy the 2 Travelcards separately.

If I put in York to London zone U1234 does that mean unlimited trips on the Travelcard all day or is it only 1 trip.

Thanks for the help in advance !!!

The U1234 is a single journey.

The only paper Travelcard available are zones 1-6 or 1-9. You will need to buy these separately.

Ok thanks, am I right in thinking they cost £12 a day.

It used to be cheaper to get an off peak version after 09.30 but I don't think they separate them anymore. Is that right ?

Furthermore if I want to buy them on the Virgin East coast site what do I put in. I tried Finsbury Park to London Z1-6 and it said no fares available !!!!

That isn't correct. Paper Anytime zone 1-4 Travelcards are also available, costing £12. If all travel will be after 0930 then the Off-Peak 1-6 at £12 can be purchased. In either case it will be cheaper to use Oyster or a contactless payment card.

Although it should be noted that if you're going to be spending long times on the railway without leaving (ie. track bashing/spotting) then an oyster is not preferable, as you have a chance of getting a large fare for exceeding the maximum journey time.

Yeah will be going to various stations and popping in and out. Is it possible to buy the Travel cards from the Virgin East Coast site and if so what do you put in for start/end journey.

    Thanks !

You're quite right. I thought they'd got rid of the Z1-4 peak travelcard at the last fares round.

IIRC you can buy your Travelcards when you buy your train tickets to London, it's an option on the page where you can also buy wifi, PlusBus and buffet vouchers

ETA: Unless I'm missing something, you can't now.

I think some TOCs still offer it, but since I tend to book journeys starting from London, I neither look out for it nor would expect it to pop up.

Zone 1-4 Anytime Travelcard is still available for £12
Zone 1-6 Anytime Travelcard is £17
Zone 1-6 Off Peak Travelcard (ODT) is £12

There are no other inboundary Day Travelcards available for travel within Zones 1-6 only. Zone 1-2 Day Travelcards and Zone 1-4 ODTs are a thing of the past. There are still Anytime and Off Peak Zone 1-9 Travelcards.

You could but would need to be on a train that calls at Stevenage, which is rather limiting — the first train from York to do so today, for example, leaves at 1003 and there is no northbound train back between 1508 and 2100.

You can buy these in a single transaction on the Virgin Train West Coast site, among others.
Just put in York-Kings Cross and you get the Travelcard options after deciding your main ticket.
It comes as a separate paper ticket, just as you would get at a station booking office.

Yes the One day Travel Card used to be good value, but since the lets screw Visitors to London fare increases the off peak 1 to 6 going up from £8.90 to £12 and withdrawal of the Zone 1-2 Travel Card its less so.

Anyway Boris my answer to that is Up***** I will visit London less often as a result.

Yes, generally with a time penalty of changing at Peterborough, but does that actually save much - or indeed any - money? what are your findings?

Surely thats the plan we want less Northerners travelling down on discounted super mega advances and buying a tesco £3 meal deal and clogging the place up and more mega rich foreigners?

Fares have decreased for most visitors to London, who use Oyster cards or contactless payment cards and now pay a cap of just £6.40 per day irrespective of the time they travel.

Some people choose (yes, choose) not to use Oyster cards for whatever reason, and one of the consequences of that choice is that the fares are unfortunately higher.

We need a way to just pay the cap and we don't have to worry about things such as exceeding the maximum journey times or being charged for tapping out.
I spent ages yesterday worrying about even using oyster correctly :(

It's really not complicated. All you have to do is tap in and out at the start end finish of every journey and the system will do the rest. Millions of journeys are made this way every single day without incident.

It gets slightly complicated when enthusiasts choose to hand around inside the gate line for excessive amounts of time.

The answer to that is to touch out upon arrival at the station and touch in just before leaving again. Perhaps communicate with whoever is on the gateline as to the reasoning behind this. Simples!

Yes, the problems with using Oyster for bashing are very greatly overstated.

You're obviously an Upper Class Northerner, what job do you do on the council?
