On Friday while braving the wonders of the South West Trains empire, I noticed upon my return to London Waterloo what looked like a entrance to a subway leading to the Underground which was gated out of use.

I'm sure there was some sign-age stating it led to the Waterloo and City line, the platform I arrived on was Platform 8 - can anyone familiar with the station throw some light onto it please?

Where did it actually lead to?
How long has it been there?
When was it last in use if not in use today?

Cheers, :)

There is a subway about 50 metres from the barrier line that connects most (a11?) of the overground platforms. Can also be used to access the Underground.

Think it only open during the peaks.

It goes into the underground station and is only open during the peak.

Allows for a barrier free interchange between the mainline station and the W&C line.
