Hi. Apologies if there is a previous thread on this but I thought it would be good to have one dedicated to the return of long term out of use units and their eventual return.

Are people aware of the return or impending return of the following:

150219
155346
165124
170204
317722
321448
333009
Add others here that I have missed....

I for example would like a trip to London to knock off my final 321's but would rather wait until I knew 448 was running to avoid having to go back as I only need 6 of them and one of them being 448.

Presumably you can add the two LM 350s involved in the Watford Junction Tunnel incident... does anyone know their numbers?

165124 is getting put back together at St Phillips Marsh this week. It is due a B Exam, which will be done at SPM to give them turbo experience plus any outstanding modification work then it will be returned to Reading.

444002 has been out of use for some time due to a damaging fatality a few months ago, it's currently dumped in Bournemouth depot.

Is 317722 expected to come back? It's non standard and Greater Anglia are currently supplementing their fleet with the ex-GN 317s.

Given the rolling stock shortages, particularly with DMUs, what are the reason these have been out of service for so long?

Wasn't the good part of 150219 combined with 150238 to form 150938?

If so, 150938 has been split again so I assume it's back in service.

I believe it was spilt up last week, but hasn't been reunited with the other half yet. Will need an exam before it enters service as well I'm told.

155346 has been "under refurbishment" for just over a year at Brodies Kilmarnock. It's the first one done so you'd expect it to take longer... just not this long! By all accounts there were severe corrosion issues discovered which weren't easy to patch up.

Believe it is having that exam at SPM currently.

Is it too damaged that it can't be "boxed" with another unit and used on the Waterloo-Portsmouth Harbour route?

There are no diagrams that involve a ten car 444 that don't also involve detachments or attachments at some point. The result is that the 0755 Portsmouth-Waterloo (empties to Clapham and back) then 1815 Waterloo-Southsea (then to Fratton depot) is now a 450/444 hybrid for the foreseeable future. That is the least harmful way of managing the situation.

Is that why I constantly see short-formed 450s?

So to go through them:

150219 - the damaged unit from the collision in Plymouth. That should be back fairly soon. Wasn't this one just refurbished internally a few weeks prior?

155346 - refurb at Kilmarnock?
165124 - Paddington derailment?
170204 - Thetford level crossing collision?

Don't know about the three EMUs though, if anyone can shed some light?

350233 and 350264.

When was this?

150938 has been split.

Latest GWR hybrid is 150916, which consists of 57212 sandwiched in between 150216.

150126 back in original formation.

That surprises me a bit; the damage really must be exceptionally severe, not that I want explicit details, of course. Even the 377s which have had their cabs busted by high-speed fatalities at the likes of Balcombe have usually been returned to service by Southern in a matter of weeks, or at most a month or two, including (if I remember correctly) one which had to be rebuilt by Bombardier.

483002 would seem an obvious candidate, it was once mooted for a return but that must now be unimaginable.

Presumably Siemens' maintenance contract doesn't oblige them to repair it, then?

Do any SWT's 450s have damaged cabs meaning they've been "boxed" and in effect out of long term use in terms of not being able to be used as a unit on their own? I think there might have been a couple but don't know if they've yet been repaired.

With 444002 is it the cab that's damaged or something below the buffer-beam level that's damaged?

I think it was about a year or so before, it just kept breaking down all over the place!

EDIT: It was definitely refurbished by 11th April 2015 as it was running to and from Dorchester West coupled to a 158 and I remember seeing the new PIS screens! (They weren't switched on though)
