Does anyone know the longest distance CDR? I was surprised to see one Welwyn Garden City to Hereford --- a 4:30 journey each way making it tough (on any wives dragged along at least) to return the same day!

How about:
Cumbernauld to Mallaig?
The Off Peak Day Return (CDR) is £36.90 for that flow. 178 miles.

This CDR is awful value, at £92.80 and forces you to travel via Honiton (ie, the slow SWT route). It is, curiously, priced by FCC. I suspect (and hope) none of these tickets are ever sold, as they are a rip-off.
The SSR via Taunton is £84.50.

Yes, that must be the furthest, as these are the furthest points in the former Network South East (NSE) area, now known simply as the "Network Area". The distance is around 270-280 miles, depending on the exact route taken.

Of course it forces you via Honiton; as you say it's an Ex-NSE area ticket (you'd be able to get the Network Railcard discount on it at appropriate times) and the FGWs route to London from Exeter go outside that area. as for FCC pricing, why is that surprising? How is it decided on such a journey which of the two operators will price the ticket?
Not strictly a CDR but still a Day Return originating in the UK - how about Derry to Tralee (approx 410 miles) for £72 return? (Normal - ie monthly - return is £79.) Only snag is that the first arrival into Tralee is at 18:58 and the last return departure of the day that connects to Derry is at 13:15!
