Hi, as per the heading I was wondering if anyone was aware of a book or perhaps a website containing the depot allocations and dates of transfer of all diesel locomotives throughout their existence, I'm particularly interested in the 1970s and 1980s. Rather than having to trawl through endless monthly magazines of the time perhaps someone has already done it?
Thank you.

Shed by Shed by Tony Walmsley: Part 7 is 1905 to 1974 and Part 8 is 1974 to 1998. These list by shed (in alphabetic order) with locos in number order: dates are listed to the month the largest portion of the appropriate period fell in. There are also Roger Harris’ Allocation History books, which list by loco number.

There's also a diesel and electric loco register, that looks from the other side. It lists locos and puts the allocations against them with dates, rather than lists depots with their locos (I think that makes sense!). I cannot remember the compiler or publisher, unfortunately.

Sound interesting, cheers.

There is a Diesel & Electric Loco Register, but I don’t think this gives allocations. Roger Harris’ Allocation History of BR Diesels & Electrics series comes in several volumes and lists each loco separately: it gives all a locos allocations and dates of reallocation, plus various other similar details.

I must be thinking of a different book, then. I had one probably around 1990 but it didn't really 'do much' for me, being many levels of interest deeper than I have ever had with traction. The cover was red (though not much because of two photos on it, one of which was a class 60 if memory serves).

This sounds like what I'm looking for. The final part, part 7 Final Update, Third and Final edition, can be bought for £30, I'll give it a go.
Thanks for your replies.

I think, please check before buying, that Volume 7 contains updates and corrections to volumes 1 to 6. Very useful if you have the earlier volumes, but possibly only of limited value on its own.
