Note: split from I lost my ticket on the train and got stopped for "Not having a ticket"

A similar thing happened to me a while ago. I was travelling from Salisbury to Southampton Airport, and broke my journey at Southampton Central for a few hours. I put my ticket through the barrier and my train was in, the guard was getting ready to dispatch and kindly let me on at his door, but when I got on the train I couldn't find my ticket.

No ticket checks took place on the train or at the station so it turned out not to be a problem (apart from submitting my expense claim!) but I'm just curious what could have happened if my ticket had been checked.

One of three things: depending on area you could have been issued a penalty fare, required to buy a new ticket or reported for a potential prosecution.

Losing tickets happens a lot, problem is that many serial fare-Dodgers will use loss as an excuse if challenged. About 2 years ago I stupidly left my Mcard on a Northern Leeds to Victoria service (I'd only travelled from Batley to Dewsbury) and only realised this when I was unusually ticket-checked on the connecting TPE service to Huddersfield. I bought a single from Dewsbury to Huddersfield (The Northern conductor had checked me between Batley and Dewsbury) and on arrival at Huddersfield managed to get put in touch with Northern control who contacted the guard on board the 158 I'd left my card on, and arranged for it to be sent back to Huddersfield for me to collect after the football match (it was a Saturday). I guess this goes to show that even though there's plenty of "chancers" rail staff are pretty good at weeding them out and will go the extra mile to help those who are clearly genuine.

I stupidly lost a ticket wallet containing a return York-Middlesborough and a Northern Complimentary travel voucher somewhere between boarding a GC at York and boarding a TPE at Thirsk.

Unfortunately, an RPI came down the train after Thirsk...

I obviously couldn't find the ticket when he appeared but I was given plenty of time to find it (while the RPI checked the rest of the train). Told him exactly what the tickets were, and my season ticket (for a completely different route) was looked as out of interest. I did offer to buy a new ticket, but he wouldn't take money off me, and contacted Thirsk station to see if they could find the ticket wallet. They didn't.

Luckily for me, the ticket I bought in Middlesborough to get home made me £150 in VT Delay Repay! (When they paid £50 to everything as it was an anytime return and it went pear shaped three times!)
