The set of 6 numbers on the front of the train are called the TOPS number. It is a unique identifier for that particular unit (for these purposes, you can think of a unit as just a set of carriages which are permanently coupled together).
The set of 5 numbers on the side of each carriage is a coach number, and is an identifier for that particular carriage.

It would help if you could inform us what the 5 digit number from the side of the carriage and the 6 digit from the front of the train were. It would also help if you can remember how many carriages the train was formed of, as we can then work out (if needed) whether the train was formed of multiple units coupled together.

But all of this is really only going to have a point if you are interested in the operational details of the railway. If you don't care about all of this, and all you want to do is find your luggage, then just phone Southeastern and tell them as many details as you can. More than likely your luggage isn't still on the train anyway and is in a lost property office somewhere.

If you have the number in question, you can contact Southeastern directly as they might have found your luggage.

I think you might have misremembered some of those details? The first 3 digits of the TOPS number (the number on the front) indicate what class the unit is - it's roughly the equivalent of say a model of car, but for trains. So the train you were travelling on was a Class 376.
Most units can either operate on their own, or with more than one of the same class coupled together ("in multiple"). But because class 376s have 5 coaches, it couldn't have been an 8 car train, because one on it's own would have been 5 coaches, and two in multiple would have been 10 coaches.

Here's a photo of a 376. Did your train look something like this? (Photo by Hugh Llewelyn under the Creative Commons BY-SA 2.0 license):

I'm happy to answer any further questions and continue explaining this, but I should warn you before you proceed further that this information is very unlikely to help you find your luggage - as others have stated, it's probably been removed from the unit in question by now anyway.

No. There generally isn't.

Also probably wouldn’t help you much as most trains have a litter picker go through at the end of the line where any lost property would be tracked down.

One from 2019 with the service details and a pic of a 376 sitting at Victoria

Bottom of this thread with a mention and sighting of 376s at Vic.

The Op clearly mentions they were on a 376 into Victoria. I have no reason to doubt them. The 376 into Victoria was running daily and then COVID hit. I haven't been up to Vic since November but there was a 376 sitting in the wall sidings. I have no idea which service the Op was on and I also couldn't find anything non stop in the timetable. However; the sheer number of STP diagrams is making it difficult to track a specifc service. However, 376s can, and have, run into Vic from Lewisham. The Op may have been diverted.

If @cyakio is ammenable. Could they please upload the pic or the unit and/or let us know which service they were on.
