2A Ashford-Kingsnorth-Woodchurch

This route continues to Tenterden, thus providing two buses per hour Ashford - Tenterden. Quite why the evening service operates as 2 but the Sunday service as 2A, I've never really understood. If the feeling is that the out of hours service is really only for complete journeys and not so much for the intermediate places, then the Sunday service should probably run as 2.

A similar listing for my area would be fairly brief, and at least two of these might struggle a bit to be considered as "major".

Medway Towns: (Arriva except as noted)
101 Gillingham - Chatham - Maidstone
151 Chatham - Rochester - Strood - Cuxton - Halling - Snodland - West Malling - Kings Hill (Nu-Venture)
155 Chatham - Rochester - Wouldham - Burham - Aylesford - Maidstone
190 Chatham - Rochester - Strood - Gravesend
191 Chatham - Rochester - Strood - Hoo - Isle of Grain
326/327 - Chatham - Gillingham - Rainham - Sittingbourne (Chalkwell Garage)
700 Chatham - Rochester - Strood - Bluewater

A noteable absence from this list and mine is any services linking Huddersfield and South Yorkshire, particularly Barnsley. The villages to the South of Huddersfield (Scissett, Clayton West, Denby Dale) have historical links with Barnsley but in the past 15 years we've gone from 2-3 buses an hour to absolute zero. Centrebus tried it a few years ago with service 85 but as they only allocated one bus and one driver for a single return journey, the timings were not really practical as it allowed only a 2 hour stay in Barnsley. It's cross-boundary services like this that have really suffered since deregulation.

That's probably one reason the buses have gone, but whilst the train is convenient for people from Shepley and Denby Dale, many of the other villages in the HD8 area (Skelmanthorpe, Scissett, Clayton West, Shelley and Kirkburton) which have historical links with Barnsley due to mining, no longer have a direct service. There's buses to Denby Dale but they don't connect particularly well or reliably. The old 85 service was a laughably half-arsed attempt to remedy this.

Its a shame that Stagecoach couldn't have extended the 24 to Kirkburton, renumbered the Penistone to Kirkburton section as 85 / 86 and branded the service as 'The Colliery Link' when they took over the 24 from Tates. Thinking about it, Stagecoach probably would need a small outstation at Penistone as it could somehow be interworked with the current 25 to Holmfirth.

On a seperate note the privately owned pit at Scissett closed in 2013.

Another planet...

I had no idea that mining had survived as long as that in the area, even though I have family in Skelmanthorpe and pass through Scissett regularly. Where was this pit? It can't have been big for me to miss it!
