5Z47 Ardwick - Carnforth ECS with 47854 TnT with 47500. As mentioned its 47500 (on the rear) that's derailed and caught fire.
Its on the pointwork of Ordsall Lane Junction.

A video has appeared on the ITV website. The loco is at quite an angle and the fire looks pretty fierce:

The manchester evening news are already working on a metrolink conspiracy theory. At present, their reporter mr kirby will be leaving an empty can of metrolink petrol at the scene for the fire brigade to find.
One more duff gone, not many to go!
.... or Greater Anglia, they both don't get great press!
What with the "diamond" replacement problem on the line into Salford Central, this area of Salford is certainly having more than its fair share of problems at the present time..
Funny you should say that, 1P18 Liverpool St - Norwich derailed and then re-railed itself leaving Liverpool St today hence the Liverpool St PM peak is totally destroyed due to the ongoing investigations.
Photos from Manchester don't look too good, facts as to as and why will be interesting...
Must be the day for it!!
BTP tweeted driver ok 5 mins back
Good job the compensation cap is still there, an incident like this could bankrupt a tour operator

Shows that they didnt cancel the service, though got a fairly bad delay in the Shenfield area, i assume they didnt realise what happened until after it left though.
Doesn't explain the fire though...
That is just conjecture.Rumours of the derailment being caused by buffer-locking. Doesn't explain the fire though...
The video of the (one) fireman wasting water (most of it wasnt even reaching the loco) just reinforces my opinion of the fire service, there looks to be at least 3 fire engines there and just the one bloke with a hose actually doing something, pathetic display.
That is just conjecture.
Buffer locking will pull the coach off not the heavier loco anyway.
The fire could have been caused by the fuel tank rupturing when the loco derailed.
There are many possibilities for the derailment and fire and the truth will out in good time, I have got my own opinion as to the cause but it is just my opinion and so not relevant to this incident, I wonder how close I am though as I am normally pretty good at these!
