Would the sectional appendix list which ones just connect two sides of farms and which are "public" crossings?

The SA will normally only list public highways, plus those that have a telephone link to the relevant signal box. Footpaths, bridal ways, private crossings (and the occasional public highway) without telephones will not be shown.

Thanks, that is much more helpful.

Hence the phrase 'very, very rarely'. This is 4 crossings out of hundreds on the line.

Add to that Forden (new road built at colossal cost - "money no object" or so I was told regarding that one), and the newish road at Penarth, Newtown. It appears there's a very big pile of cash available to close crossings and NR are quite delighted to spend it.

Offsetting that cash against the ongoing low-level risk will even out for some length of time x.

For info, at the time my friend retired (2 years ago) there were 124 UWC's with telephone contact to Machy Box!

Mobile phones could not be used at many of them.
Many are not just between farm fields, but on access roads to farms, homes, kennels and even caravan sites!

That said, even when they do phone there's no guarantee they won't get hit...

There have been more incidents of vehicles being struck due to "misuse" by the users than any thing else.
