Over the 3 days of the Queens Birthday weekend a major transport heritage event was held at Central station, Sydney. It was organised and operated by member/volunteers of the New South Wales Rail Museum.
The rolling stock displayed included 3 steam & 4 heritage diesel locomotives along with a pair of 1960’s vintage, air-conditioned dining cars.
Beyer Garret locomotive 6029 (4-8-4+4-8-4) was featured along with a 101 years old 10 wheeler recently out of major overhaul. These locomotives hauled 4 trains each on each of the 3 days on short 60 minutes round trips to suburban destinations. The first of these was a parallel run with considerable leapfrogging. See the link to a footplate ride on the Garret.

Vintage EMU and diesel rail car trips were also operated.
Over the 3 days more than 10,000 passengers were carried and over 600 devonshire teas served in the dining cars. For about 9 hours on each day we had exclusive use of the 3 longest platforms at Central station. The trains ran to timetables which allowed them to intermingle with routine services by Sydney Trains and not interfere with them. This is clear from the video. The special trains all ran to time.
THE PHOTOGRAPH
On Tuesday the locomotives and carsets returned from Sydney to their home at the rail museum in the lower Southern Highlands. In the photograph 6029 has left the mainline and is traversing the branch to the museum at Thirlmere. The grade is 1 in 40 (2.5%). Please note; the locomotive has no assistance and is performing all of its own work. The image will not upload. It has now loaded.
THE EVENT is a major achievement for any organisation and particularly for a member/volunteer based one. At times the arrival and departure of the special trains at Central resembled a small network operation requiring strict timekeeping and separation of services.
