Some new bicycle storage racks have appeared at Manningtree station. They are the two level type where the upper level lifts up and down.

Most notably there are lots of them, far more than I would expect. Manningtree isn’t surrounded by the urban sprawl that would generate lots of cycling to the station.

Any ideas what’s behind it?

£180k of DfT money if this link is anything to go by:

The old cycle shed was closed as GA thought they could turn it into a retail outlet, which seems impractical. A new small area of secure cycle parking was provided instead, but now this monster with 100 extra spaces has appeared. However it isn‘t used much as the existing cycle storage nearer the platform is more convenient.

‘Bike and Go‘ came and went, with hardly a cycle being hired in two years. The steep climb up Cox’s Hill on the A137 to the South of the station presumably puts many off cycling.

And very brightly lit during darkness they are too. Ticks the sustainable transport box no doubt regardless of whether they are actually needed.

They are indeed brightly lit, which is why they caught my attention when passing through last night.

There must be at least three times as many as there are at Ipswich. Ippo serves a much larger residential area and I have never seen the bike area full (although admittedly I don’t tend to look at such things).

I imagine the majority of passengers cycling to Manningtree would take their bike onwards on the train.

Not particularly, you get a few but no more than any other station. There simply aren't as many cyclists as there are parking spaces.

I haven’t seen the manningtree one yet but have seen what what seems similar at marks tey
Possibly a similar situation, a very large cycle park fo r somewhere that I thought would not have huge amounts of cycle travel (only based on not realy seing masses of bikes chained up all around the place)
