Hi all,
The chances of finding my bashing logs are probably nil (if they still exist it will be when I retire when I get around to hunting for them!).
However a few snippets from my youth can be dug up but first this may be of intereset.

A TOPS report as follows....
POWER REPORT FOR MOSSEND at 14:41 on 16.10.88

Found an old book.....
When I was at school it was common for me and my Dad to nip to Manchester Victoria on Thu nights to break the school/working week up and observe the movements.
This was done by way of catching the evening Scotland to Nottingham service booked for an ETH Class 47(possibly from Dundee but think laterally from Glasgow Central).

At Man Vic we'd see what was about along with popping in Travellers Fare on Platform 12 for a big bag of Golden Wonder Salt and Vinegar crisp and a tea (with 2 sugars- I never had sugar in tea at home as it "was bad for your teeth"lol), the big bag of crisp was a luxury in those days for me!

This thread will probably be all over the place as more old logs come to light so apologies in advance!

Back in the 80's my Dad frequently got us tours around Crewe Works on a weekend, often meeting at the main gate and then a full tour around.
So looking at the log book I have the following showing for the 24th March 1984 and its off to Crewe.
Sadly in those days I just marked what we had for haulage with a star and my notes wasn't the best!
Judging by the amount of Class 304's seen it seems we departed via Manchester Piccadilly with 86210 taking us down to Crewe.
It was then the long walk (never recall catching a Bus anywhere on any visits in those days no matter how long the walk!) with the following hitting the log book in the Works.

Of the 127 loco's noted I picked up 14 new ones which at the time for us was an fantastic showing.
These consisted of 20026, 20055, 20065, 20182 , 37084 and 37230.
The reworked (now ETH) Class 47's 47608 to 47611 (Had seen them as previous guises) and all the brand new build Class 56's so 56130 to 56133.

Its then a long walk back to Crewe station and a bit of time seeing what was around.
What stands out is the fact I noted 50007 at Crewe which would have been very unusual but i haven't put if this was on Crewe Diesel depot or on a passenger working.
Its then 86228 from Crewe to Manchester Piccadilly thus ending a productive day out.

I suppose I should give a bit of background info.
In terms of bashing I suppose like most I progressed from logging numbers except I always tried to keep up taking notes particularly what locos's worked what.
In the late 70's / early 80's I had a sticker on my bag which said 'I'm a whistler basher' so like most people from NW England I clearly liked Class 40's as a youngster (suspect my Mum didn't like the sticker as she said some idiot will be whistling in the street and see that sticker and take offence and you'll get in a fight - think It cracked and got worn out in anyhow and thus I replaced it with one of those Red Nameplate stickers you could buy, bizarrely I bought and stuck on 'The Commonwealth Spirit').
I used to love going to York to see the Deltics with my dad as a youngster(one of my all time highlights is my Grand parents taking me to York for a day during the school holidays as an 9 year old and 55018 producing on a Liverpool - Newcastle!)
Laterally as a young teenager I'd do what most did in 'scratching' new loco's but if I could get a longer ride or some Mileage I took a like to Class 45's, the Generator Class 47/4's and the Original Class 47 Twintanks so they would be what I'd go for if following nothing inparticular and if finances was available!
Not quite sure why it panned like this however I suppose the logic was The 45's followed from Class 40's (had been used to seeing them all my life but suddenly they was going), the Generators was just - well pure hellfire - what a noise, and the 47/6 Twintanks was probably due to doing quite a lot of ECML overnight moves and they always impressed me with the mileage they did, throw in a spell on Class 90's in later years and its safe to say I've covered most things!!

One plus point is I have always graphed anything new/refurbished when others have give it 'im not touching that plastic' etc , Thus I now have a good photo collection of virtually all new Loco's /DMU's and Emu's when on test or new in service from the 80's right through to the Northern Class 195 out last week!

Anyone enough waffle.....
WAYFARER LOCAL SUNDAY 28TH JUNE 1987
===============================
Its Sunday 28th June 1987 and its time to see what is out in the Manchester Area so a day of scratching (hopefully!)some new loco's and its a Wayfarer ticket purchased so the mileage will be low today but as there will be around 8 of us on the bash it will be(as usual) an excellant crack!
First move of the day is 47448 on the 10:14 from Bolton to Manchester Victoria, one of those run of the mill Class 47's that everyone took for granted but I'd now love to see in passenger service these days, however back then it was better than a DMU/Sprinter without being anything good!
At Manchester Victoria 47587 is waiting with the 10:21 to Edinburgh and is dud and flagged, stabled around the place is 31209, 45040 and 47109.
As the wires was off at Manchester Piccadilly its over to Picc via viewing the usual sunday morning 'charactors' that frequented train stations back then on a sunday morning.
47547 is the loco of choice and its taken all the way to...Stockport on the 11:25 from Man Picc, of note to me is 45104 on Longsight depot.
I must have jumped a unit back (regret not writing them down to later in years)as I have a quick leap of 47535 Picc to Stockport for 47649 Stockport to Picc.
I then do a unit to Stockport for 45150 on the 14:06 to Picc (was possibly the remnants of the European), if it was a Peak and I had the funds to buy a piece I'd do this back to Sheffield but seemingly not today as I do another unit to Stockport for 31447 back to Picc as a fill in move before 45150 to Stockport on the 15:25 departure.
Its fair to say (45150 aside)nothing is happening so 47616 and 31427 are added to the leaps before a winner turns up which is 47484 on the 18:01 off Stockport.
This must have had a quick turnaround as I have it back out on the 18:29 to Stockport before my leaping finishes on 31444.
I then walk over to Manchester Victoria for the Unit home
Sat stabled are 08914, 31443, 45104 which has arrived from Longsight and is now joined by 45149 (no doubt for parcels work), 47003, 47093, 47237 and 47292, I also bag a winner for sight as 150264 puts in an appearance (probably on a Scarborough train)no doubt with a grey front end.

People used to ask did you ever get fed up just leaping about such short distances and the answer was always no, usually you had the 'I wonder whats going to come around the corner now' moment which was usually a CD Class 47 but occasionally it was something huge which made it all worthwhile and to be honest I was with mates having a laugh all day, we monitored what was arriving on Longsight so if anything NB turned up we had it covered(this long before mobile phones/accessable gen), if we missed it a couple of mates who was photographers who stayed at Stockport all day soon pointed us in the right direction and dont forget a lot of these locos only worked Picc - Stockport vice Electrics and you have to remember in 1987 people still at school or just leaving school didn't have lots of disposable income to buy rovers or tickets to just swan off for 100-200miles - that came later!!

So the moves for the day(minus the units)........
47448 10:14 Bolton - Man Vic
47547 11:25 Man Picc - Stockport
47535 12:40 Man Picc - Stockport
47649 13:00 Stockport - Man Picc
45150 14:06 Stockport - Man Picc
31447 15:09 Stockport - Man Picc
45150 15:25 Man Picc - Stockport
47616 16:03 Stockport - Man Picc
31427 16:49 Stockport - Man Picc
47484 18:07 Stockport - Man Picc
47484 18:29 Man Picc - Stockport
31444 18:49 Stockport - Man Picc

Winners for haulage:
47484 **All my mates said it was dud and I must admit I thought i'd had it but the famous red pen didn't have it underlined in the Platform 5 book, got home and my Dad pointed out we'd had it Manchester Victoria to Darlington in BR Blue days!
Winners for sight:
150264.

An enjoyable relaxing Sunday!

1987 NORTH WEST ROVER:

PT1 Sunday 09th August 1987
=========================
Had been looking forward to this for a few weeks, my first annual leave from recently started work and a chance to get out on the Bash!
Had a couple of aims........
-To get as many new haulages as possible (only recorded loco’s at this point)
-To get an overnight in at Carlisle to get the MK3 Sleeper stock which I’d not long been collecting for sight (also wanted to nip on and grab one of those very smart window labels for the collection of the overnight stock).
-Get a run on the S&C
-Get a run on 40122 (hopefully get the S&C and 40122)
-Get a Eastfield NB loco on a Carlisle turn.
Apart from that it was a case of seeing what was out and getting a bit more mileage(better runs)than usual.

Normally I’d be scratching bits around Manchester in short station hops searching for a winner especially with it being a Sunday-drags, (although in fairness aside from the Classes I mentioned in a earlier post I’ve never been fussed about accumulating mileage) but with the rover burning a hole in my pocket it was up and off.
My usual Sunday train was viewed at Bolton as 47451 was on the first Carlisle to Manchester Victoria however it wasn’t long before my steed arrived in 47478 on the 10:21 Bolton to Preston on the first Manchester-Glasgow train, was 15 late and made way at Preston for 86230 which was taken to Carlisle for a bit of mileage.

Carlisle had only previously been passed through en route to/from Scotland with my Dad so a few entered the log for sight to be honest it was generally the new stuff I was after, by now not too many BR locos was required so I was looking for the newish Class 143/144 and 150’s, I recalculated the clock each year for the WCML Electric loco’s for haulage so a couple needed for the year which you’ll see further on !
It was a very productive visit with 08768, 143020 and 2 MK3 Sleepers in 10601 & 10730 troubling the scorers, brilliant start to the week!
The full list noted at Carlisle before my train back South was...
08768, 08910, 08912
26031
40122
47427, 47503, 47540, 47635, 47650
85004, 85006
86217, 86404
87030, 87032

Typical Carlisle line up of Scots loco’s with Crewe Depots and WCML Electrics.

My loco of choice was winner for the year haulage machine 87030 on the 15:25 departure which I took to Lancaster noting another winner in 20175 near Carnforth.
86230 was then taken on the 17:28 Lancaster to Preston.

An hour or so at Preston gave nothing new for haulage so after hanging around I jumped on winner for the year 86412 on the 18:45 Preston to Lancaster.
At Lancaster an additional Glasgow Central to London Euston was showing on the screens but sadly it was just 86261 which I took at 19:44 from Lancaster back to Preston.
The reason for the additional became clear shortly after it departed as 85006 turned up on the 19:25 London running 60 late which was a winner for the year.
Unlike this day in age the train ran through to London so it was a ride down to Warrington Bank Quay from Preston for some Roarer thrash!

At Warrington BQ I jumped 87035 back to Wigan North Western at 20:56 on a Euston – Glasgow for a DMU home from Wigan Wallgate thus ending the first day.

The totals was 8 Loco’s for haulage with sadly nothing new however 3 New electrics for the 1987 haulage year!
Sight wise I’d nailed 5 which represented a good day.

The second day starts and as the ticket wasn't valid to around 09:30 I viewed the early morning Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria (just in case it was a big winner)but today it was 47146 which was dud for me so need to buy a piece today but I thought I'd have a spin on it later.

A DMU was taken to Preston and it was a case of wait and see what turns up.
In my notes I have 304017 in the log at Preston which I can't recall being common here at that time
87028 is taken up to Carlisle and I have now reverted to Plan B as I'd noticed 47427 sat on the S&C stock at Carlisle yesterday which was a winner for haulage so I'd opted to tick off the S&C for a run today.
143008 was gratefully received arriving on a Newcastle train so the sightings was up and running so all was well.

As a teenager it was safe to say I found the S&C totally boring with nothing to look at, whilst the 47 was a winner it was a slow uneventful run!
After a lifetime I arrived at Leeds and set about hunting some Class 144's for sight with 144015/020/022/023 hitting the book of sights along with 150136.
I didn't bother trying to blag on the Trans Pennine loco to Manchester Victoria (Rover ticket was only valid via Calder Valley in those days)as it was only 47477 so it was another slow journey back to Manchester on a DMU via Bradford Interchange .
At Manchester Victoria I opted for the NW circuit of Man Vic-Blackpool / Anglo Scots leaps so had 47316, 47451, 47110 and having noted it heading to Blackpool earlier I did a DMU for 47146 before heading home on 1M40 which was 47488.

Just the 1 winner for haulage but the S&C was ticked off for the first time.

New Sightings 6 (1 Class 143, 4 Class 144 & 1 Class 150/1).
New Haulage 1 (47427)

The Moves:
87028: 10:10 Preston - Carlisle
47427: 12:37 Carlisle - Leeds
47316: 18:20 Man Vic - Preston
47451: 19:01 Preston - Bolton
47110: 19:58 Bolton - Preston
47146: 21:10 Blackpool N - Preston
47488: 22:19 Preston - Bolton

1987 NORTH WEST ROVER

PT3 TUESDAY 11TH AUGUST 1987
============================
Opted to jump down to Manchester Victoria to see what the AM Nottingham to Blackpool North throwed out so jumped on 47146 for a short fester.
It was dud 47277 so was flagged to see what was put on the Man Vic Anglo Scots.
Whilst at Manchester Victoria 47411 was on the 09:30 to Liverpool Lime St (ex Newcastle) and 47402 the 09:52 to Newcastle (ex Liverpool), both of better quality however I wanted to head to the borders so it was dud 47647 I opted for as I’d hung around enough, 142096 on a Leeds via Bradford and 150276 on a Scarborough service had at least troubled the scorers.

At Preston 87035 was noted as ‘derailed’ (must have come off in the South sidings) and M80373 was a winner TPO (forgot to mention in an earlier post I’d also started collecting TPO coaching stock as well as Sleeper Mark 3’s- thus the Carlisle overnight plan).
I was pleased to see 47647 when hooked off be replaced by winner for the year 85034 for the the thrash up Shap to Carlisle.
Just like these days Carlisle had a Steam charter in town as 34092 was parked up, another Geordie Pacer was bagged for sight as 143014 was noted arriving from Newcastle.

My guess(hope!) that something would drop on the G&S route was duly rewarded as what was a massive(for me)Eastfield Class 47 produced as 47150 was on the Carlisle to Glasgow.
From memory I remember thinking I'd not picked anything good up as initially it didn’t look a NB loco as 47150 carried the BR large logo livery so was a huge bonus when I got nearer to see it wasn’t just a Crewe Diesel ETH Class 47!
This would be one to brag about with my mates as it was on a lot of needs lists(Eastfield NB Class 47’s not being common around Greater Manchester for lads at/just out of school!).

I took it to Annan and fell on 47480 another winner (one I was ribbed about frequently as being ‘slack’for needing it for haulage) however this had been a particularly difficult loco to come by in our family.
47480 was the last Class 47 we’d needed for sight, and trust me it had been a very long time coming, It was a Toton Class 47 so no excuses really but I can remember it evading us for years, I can even remember being wound up by my Dad in the early 1980’s that he’d seen it from work and thus sulking for hours that he’d got it and I hadn’t (only for him to burst out laughing after much cajoling from my Mum to stop it as he hadn’t actually seen it!), we eventually nailed it and in good time honoured fashion had then seen it almost weekly for about a month in various locations around the UK afterwards (I think it did move to Crewe from Toton in fairness)however haulage wise it had been a struggle so was pleased to get this ‘outlaw’ loco red penned and highlighted for good!

At Carlisle 85006 was on a Glasgow to Euston but I flagged it for some reason(think it was to see if 40122 dropped on the S&C but it was 47427 again), was pleased to see M80332 at Carlisle a red pen for me!
87029 was taken back to Preston to view the Man Vic’s and see if anything dropped that was required.
47146 was on the Blackpool-Man Vic however I took 31415 from Preston-Blackpool N-Preston before a fill in move to Wigan with 87013 for 87008 back (winner for the year) before catching 1M40 home which incredibly was 31452!
It was a winner for haulage (and I'd been tipped off it was on it) but needless to say it struggled on MK3’s and ETH on a Glasgow-Manchester with it giving the impression it was going to explode such was the racket!

A brilliant day!

New Sightings: 5 (x1 Class 142, x1 Class 143, x1 Class 150/2, x2 TPO)
New Haulage: 3 (31452, 47150, 47480) with 85034 and 87008 new for the year

The Moves....

47647: 10:25 Manchester Victoria-Preston

I used to do 87s for mileage. Loved them. Great names.
Grew up with Class 87's but spent the early years of Class 90's doing those for mileage so lost intereset in the other electrics to a degree.
Of course nowadays I'd love to see a proper train on the WCML operated by any loco rather than the Pendo, Voyagers or Class 350's!

1987 NORTH WEST ROVER

PT 4 WEDNESDAY 12TH AUGUST 1987
===============================
A late start as tonight I was to tick off one of the aims of purchasing the rover which was to do an ‘overnighter’ on Carlisle station to see and graph all the activity, get the Sleepers and TPO ‘s for sight and some of the Sleeper window labels for my collection along with covering the morning loco hauled (and overnight)diagrams just in case something good popped up!

47146 was noted heading to Blackpool North from Manchester Victoria before I board 47483 to Manchester Victoria on what I think was a lunch time scot service.
Nothing to trouble the scorers at Manchester Victoria despite plenty of new Class 150’s about.
Was hoping for some generator mileage as a bit of a fill in move before tonight's overnight so was somewhat disappointed when 47424 ran in on my service to Liverpool Lime Street.
It was taken regardless, little of note picked up en route however 508112 was a winner for sight at Liverpool Lime Street Merseyrail platforms.
More pleasing was 47413 on the 15:01 to Newcastle which was taken back to Manchester Victoria.
Again nothing to trouble the scorers so I headed home to actually get a hot meal and supplies for the upcoming overnight so it was 47146 on the 16:20 Manchester Vic to Blackpool North which took me to Bolton.

Fed and with my bag now fully stocked up for the overnight and subsequent day (including what is now an incredibly heavy tripod but was then classed as a lightweight model)it was 47277 which took me to Preston on the PM Nottingham to Blackpool North service.
10701 was a MK3 Sleeper winner which I hoped was a thing to come before 87009 was the loco I took up to Carlisle to begin the overnighter.
Was looking forward to this as even though I’d done a lot of overnight ECML Twin Tank Class 47 moves with my Dad and also done quite a few Crewe and Preston overnight moves with my mates(despite still being at school)this was the first overnight I was doing on my own (everyone else was at work/school)and the first at Carlisle.

Typically as I arrived it was raining however looking back at the photo’s years later this really adds to the atmosphere (especially with the steel slab trains which are still steaming!)
08912 was busy shunting and the following all hit the book from the time of arrival up until 22:00hrs.......

So Its 22:00hrs and I'm at Carlisle and thankfully I had decided to do a log of what was seen between hours which years later probably helps sorting bits out!
I think this was to check how many movements was to be seen (don't forget it was word of mouth back then-no forums to ask others)and to see if it was worth the overnight!

What I’ll do is show it how I think it panned but some of the consists may be wrong (obviously)as could be some of the loco pairings however here goes.....

I suspect I then got a bit of shut eye on some suitably positioned mailbags as I only noted 08690, 37050 and the returning 86431 with 87101 before I went to check what was on the 07:48 to Glasgow via Dumfries.

Knocking off what was seen on arrival and figuring out what was stabled (40122 for example) The full listing seen between 21:00 and 05:00hrs is as follows......

Been spending far too much time on the UK railway discussion forums(lots of people with angst on those threads!)so back to normality and an update!

1987 NORTH WEST ROVER

PT6 THURSDAY 13TH AUGUST 1987
========================
Its early morning and I'm in Carlisle following a overnighter and I'm off to check whats on the 07:48 to Glasgow via the G&S, Its 47003 which I'd have thought was a winner however it was flagged so obviously not!
The 08:37 Newcastle loco hauled diagram was 47406 which whilst favourable was also flagged(presume on the basis of cost this time as the rover wasn't valid at that time of the morning).
I have a plan for the day so I won't be going far so its a quick leap to Oxenholme and back on 86401 for 87010 before the main move.
Anyone doing a overnighter will tell you its genuinly tiring so my idea to again do the S&C was perhaps not the best (particularly as I viewed it as 'boring')however 40122 was too good to turn down so it was off to Leeds via the long drag.
It was quite a mild summers day so much of the time was spent with head out of the front window, at Leeds 141007, 141010, 141015, 144005 and 150276 & 150277 was pleasing and kept the scorers awake!
40122 was then taken back to Carlisle putting in a decent performance on what was essentially a small load for these loco's, it was good to still be able to get a Class 40 in 1987 and was a highlight of the rover and one of my planned moves for the Rover ticked off.
Back at Carlisle it was winner for the year 87005 that I took to Preston before 47515 took me home which considering its 'Night Mail' name was quite ironic considering I'd been out all night chasing TPO's amongst others!
A very good day out.

New Sightings: 5 (x3 Class 141, x1 Class 144, x2 Class 150/2)
New Haulage: 1 (40122) with 87005 new for the year

The Moves....
86401: 09:34 Carlisle-Oxenholme
87010: 10:45 Oxenholme-Carlisle
40122: 12:37 Carlisle-Leeds
40122: 16:25 Leeds-Carlisle
87005: 20:46 Carlisle-Preston

PT7 FRIDAY 14TH AUGUST 1987
========================
Up and out as usual and at Manchester Victoria to see the AM Notts-Blackpool which is 47323 which sadly isn't required.
Today I have no plan as such other than to see if any winners are out and to have a ride around.
The irony of seeing ETH 47615 on the Dusty Bins isn't lost on me however I stick with the ETH theme and board 47488 to Preston.
Winner for the year 86248 is taken to Carlisle where I opt to see whats heading on the Dumfries line in the hope of dropping on a Eastfield NB Loco.
A couple of Geordie pacers trouble the scorers and I note the rover has been a big success in tracking these down.
47489 is taken to Annan and I get a winner however its just a Bescot ETH one in 47545 to Dumfries.
Sadly its another ETH loco in 47441 that takes me back to Carlisle, went on a whim and at least I got a winner!
87021 is a winner for the year and is taken to Preston before its a case of waiting for the PM Notts-Blackpool, I'm told in advance its 31270 which is a winner so its taken to Blackpool North and back.
I wait for IM40 home watching a bit of freight and hoping for another NB loco but its 47433 that is tonights traction.
Another productive day!

New Sightings: 2 (x2 Class 143)
New Haulage: 2 (31270 & 47545) with 86238 and 87021 new for the year.

The Moves....
47488: 10:25 Manchester Victoria-Preston
86238: 11:16 Preston-Carlisle
47489: 13:52 Carlisle-Annan
47545: 14:49 Annan-Dumfries
47441: 15:34 Dumfries-Carlisle
87021: 16:32 Carlisle-Preston
31270: 18:58 Preston-Blackpool North
31270: 19:44 Blackpool North-Preston

PT8 SATURDAY 15TH AUGUST 1987
========================
Rovers valid all day today so out a bit earlier and onto 47618 to Preston
The scorers are troubled as TPO M80341 is noted so the day starts well.
This luck contnues as winner for the year 86432 is taken to Warrington Bank Quay however its just 86102 that takes me back to Preston.
Things then get better as NB Winner 47281 is taken from Preston to Blackpool North for a unit back.
Another winner for the year is sighted heading North so 87015 is taken to Carlisle, 26023 is loitering but provides nothing more than a pleasant backdrop before I note another Bescot ETH Class 47 that I need is on the G&S route so 47543 is taken ina repeat of yesterdays move to Annan after which yesterdays loco's are out but have swapped diagrams so its 47441 to Dumfries for 47545 to Carlsle.
31123 is a new for sight on Kingmoor and 143017 keeps the scorers ticking over at Carlisle.
86102 is taken for the second time today in order to get in position for the PM Nottingham- Blackpool and this proves worthwhile as Winner 31124 produces which is taken to Blackpool and back out to 'I don't know where- never logged where I got off!
I did note 47647 was on IJ27 and that was that for the day!

New Sightings: 3 (x1 Class 31, x1 Class 143, x1 TPO )
New Haulage: 3 (31124, 47281 & 47543) with 86432 and 87015 new for the year.

The Moves......
47618: 07:52 Bolton-Preston
86432: 08:29 Preston-Warrington Bank Quay
86102: 09:38 Warrington Bank Quay-Preston
47281: 10:26 Preston-Blackpool North
87015: 11:39 Preston-Carlisle
47543: 13:52 Carlisle-Annan
47441: 14:49 Annan-Dumfries
47545: 15:34 Dumfries-Carlisle
86102: 16:20 Carlisle-Preston
31124: 19:00 Preston-Blackpool North
31124: 19:44 Blackpool North-??????

PT9 SUNDAY 16TH AUGUST 1987
=====================
Into the second week and today I wanted to do the Preston drags that diverted via Manchester Victoria just for the hell of going through the middle road at Manchester Victoria and for something different.
On getting another weekly NW Rover I also bought an add on piece to get me down to Crewe.
47489 took me from Bolton to Preston and to be honest I wasn't expecting much on the drags to Crewe as generally they produced ETH Crewe Class 47's.
47452 proved this theory but I did this for the enjoyable ride down from Preston to Crewe via Manchester Victoria.
Lots of locos knocking around Crewe however as if to disprove my theory I opted for a Western Region winner in 47625 City of Truro back to Preston from Crewe again via Manchester Victoria.
I have no idea how but I ended up in Lancaster (possibly a unit but likely forgot to log the Electric loco, doh!)but it was winner for the year 85036 that roared me back from Lancaster to Preston before I took 86423 down to Warrington Bank Quay.
Here a pleasant surprise as the 20:56 Northbound was 60 late and it turned up with winner for the year 81013.
47618 took me back from Preston to Bolton ending a decent day out.

New Sightings: 0
New Haulage: 1 (47625) with 81013 and 85036 new for the year.

The Moves....
47489: 09:01 Bolton-Preston
47452: 10:26 Preston-Crewe via Manchester Victoria
47625: 14:22 Crewe-Preston via Manchester Victoria
85036: 19:05 Lancaster-Preston
86423: 19:42 Preston-Warrington Bank Quay
81013: 20:56 Warrington Bank Quay-Preston
47618: 22:55 Preston-Bolton

PT10 MONDAY 17TH AUGUST 1987
=====================
A very good start to the day as 47231 was taken down to Manchester Victoria on the morning Blackpool North service.
Sadly the Nottingham-Blackpool didn't add to the days excitement as it was ETH 47567.
For the second day on the trot 47452 was bashed as it was taken from Manchester Victoria to Preston being replaced by 86259 which I took North to Carlisle.
My Class 143 sightings again grew as 143018 entered the book whilst Inverness based 47644 'The Permanent Way Instiution' was noted on the S&C Leeds run.
A bit of Electric bashing then took place with 86408 taken to Preston before 86436 was a winner for the year and taken to Lancaster on a Glasgow relief train.
It was then another Lancaster to Preston leap of 86423 for 87024 for 87015 however gen came my way of a big Class 47 (in name and on many peoples 'needs' lists who I knew)was coming out so I bailed at Preston and 47085 'Mammoth' was waited for and taken from Preston to Manchester Victoria on a Anglo Scots service!
47406 and 47421 got noted on Liverpool to Newcastle circuits and 47231 was still playing out on Manchester to Blackpools.
Headed back to Preston on a unit hoping 1M40 would drop, 85038 was noted on a Carlisle additional but it was again 47452 that took me to Bolton.

New Sightings: 1 (x1 Class 143)
New Haulage: 2 (47085 & 47231) with 86436 new for the year.

The Moves.....
47231: 08:49 Bolton-Manchester Victoria
47452: 10:25 Manchester Victoria-Preston
86239: 11:16 Preston-Carlisle
86408: 13:34 Carlisle-Preston
86436: 15:44 Preston-Lancaster
86423: 15:50 Lancaster-Preston (30 late)
87024: 16:30 Preston-Lancaster
87017: 17:17 Lancaster-Preston
47085: 18:59 Preston-Manchester Victoria
47452: 22:19 Preston-Bolton

A repeat start to yesterday however it was now dud 47231 which was taken down to Manchester Victoria to view 47411 & 47421 on Trans Pennine workings however the bashing gods smiled and winner 31203 appeared on the Nottingham to Blackpool which I took to the seaside and then back to Preston.
As per the usual it was now Carlisle bound and todays electric of choice was winner for the year 86409.
Thought i'd nip into Scotland so it was 47441 to Dumfries for 47478 back.
26013 was keeping 47660 for company at Carlisle and a bit of reight was mooching about which passed the time before I opted for winner for the year 86414 to Preston.
The PM Nottingham to Blackpool produced another winner in 31126 which like its stable mate this morning was taken to Blackpool North and back.
The day ended as it started with a NB Class 47 only this time it was winner 47286 which was on 1M40, An excellent day!

New Sightings: 0
New Haulage: 3 (31126, 31203 & 47286) with 86409 and 86414 new for the year.

47231: 08:49 Bolton-Manchester Victoria
31203: 09:40 Manchester Victoria-Blackpool North

PT12 WEDNESDAY 19TH AUGUST 1987
========================
For the third day on the spin my day started with 47231 which was taken to Manchester Victoria to view the movements.
47639 was on the AM Nottingham to Blackpool and 47406 & 47418 was noted on Trans Pennine work.
I jumped 47539 to Preston for 86405 forward to Carlisle.
I'm again hoping for a NB Eastfield Class 47 so its the Dumfries circuit wihich entails 47503 to Annan for 47480 forward to Dumfries.
I get a ETH Winner and an Inverness one at that as 47467 is the traction for my return to Carlisle.
Happy with that its 86418 south to Preston noting 47478 is operating on the S&C.
The PM Nottingham-Blackpool is also ETH in 47647 so I loiter at Preston with nothing really of note save for a MK3 Sleeper which was good for sight in 10570.
47436 takes me to Bolton a little earlier than usual to end another day on the Bash.

New Sightings: 1 (x1 MK3 Sleeper)
New Haulage: 1 (47467).

The Moves.....
47231: 08:49 Bolton-Manchester Victoria
47539: 10:25 Manchester Victoria-Preston
86405: 11:16 Preston-Carlisle
47503: 13:52 Carlisle-Annan
47480: 14:49 Annan-Dumfries
47467: 15:34 Dumfries-Carlisle
86418: 17:28 Carlisle-Preston
47436: 20:10 Preston-Bolton

PT13 THURSSDAY 2OTH AUGUST 1987
========================
The header is actually false today as my Dad had taken a day off work so we could have a spin out in the Midlands which was always a favourite jaunt.
At Manchester Victoria 47406 was noted on the first Trans Pennine of the day to Liverpool however its at Manchester Piccadilly where the day perks up as 142017 is the first winner of the day.
Even better as our first loco move of the day is 47598 which is a winner which is taken to Stafford.

On Crewe depot immaculate 47434 is ex works in its large logo livery.
We bail at Stafford to get Midline day tickets and 37207 and 58035 keeps the 'for sight' scorers ticking over.
Winner for the year 85015 is then taken to Birmingham New Street.
I actually cop a DMU at New St in M51862 amongst the many movements however we are quickly on a EMU to Bescot to the well known Midlands depot.

In the Yard and spied on the depot are the following....
08466, 08603, 08672, 08700, 08759
20008, 20048, 20058, 20077, 20130, 20168, 20195, 20209
31152, 31263, 31288
37426
47313, 47335, 47369, 47451, 47473
56107
97203 (Class 31)
58030
Of that motley collection 97203 is a winner for sight.

Its then a EMU to Duddingston and the well trod walk down the hill to Saltley Depot and seen from the side industrial estate was....
31163, 31445
37133, 37214
47369, 47442, 47553, 47568.

Both depots quieter than the usual raft of locos seen on a weekend but always enjoyed visiting both.
It was then time to scratch a few locos so back to New Street and straight away onto 50031 which was taken to Leamington Spa.
At Leamington Spa another Class 58 was sighted as 58033 rolled through on a MGR.
47547 was taken back to New Street with another DMU scored for sight on arrival.
87007 was taken to Stafford from which we noted the following on a lovely summer evening between 18:30 and 20:25hrs.

08385
20034, 20133
31263
47359, 47438, 47458
81017
85004, 85028, 85032
86102, 86103, 86222, 86233, 86249, 86253, 86255, 86261, 86401, 86404, 86407, 86411, 86428, 86436
87003, 87007, 87013, 87017
M53454/ M53528,
M51932/ M52057,
312204

86253 then took us back to Manchester Piccadilly via Crewe, the 2 Class 47's I seemed to see a lot that was Crewe Diesel depot stalwarts was ironically parked next to each other (eachwith long nameplates) in 47444 University of Nottingham and 47555 The Commonwealth Spirit, We'd literally seen them and been bowled out by them from everywhere from Plymouth to Edinburgh showing I suppose the length that Crewe diesels went.

Over to Manchester Victoria and 47433 was on 1J27 Anglo Scot and 47480 (which I'd had yesterday in Scotland)was on Manchester-Blackpools and finally 47459 arrived on 1M40.

Whilst not a NW Rover move it was a cracking day out with my Dad and as per usual had cost me nothing(never paid when I went out with my Dad, was only when I was long married he'd allow me to pay for any trip out, and even then it was generally paid back as he bought everything else food, drinks & magazine wise!)

New Sightings: 7 (x1 Class 31(Class 97), x1 Class 37, x2 Class 58, x1 Class 142, x2 Class 518xxx)
New Haulage: 2 (47598, 50031)with 85015 & 87007 new for the year

The Moves.....
47598: 08:08 Manchester Piccadilly-Stafford
85015: 10:27 Stafford-Birmingham New Street
50031: 14:40 Birmingham New Street-Leamington Spa
47547: 16:04 Leamington Spa-Birmingham New Street
87007: 17:55 Birmingham New Street-Stafford
86253: 20:03 Stafford-Manchester Piccadilly (22 late)

PT14 FRIDAY 21ST AUGUST 1987
========================
A lie in as tonight I was doing another overnight at Carlisle with my mate who had seen the amount of Sleepers I'd seen and fancied getting a few himself.
45103 was on the Dusty Bins (bizarre how so many ETH Class 47's and the odd Peak got on this!)however I got what I came for at Manchester Victoria in a small bit of Generator action as I took 47401 to Liverpool Lime Street for 47411 back.
31312 was noted on a Sheffield-Liverpool but was dud.
Back at Manchester Victoria I took 47447 to Bolton and went for food and suppies for the night before reappearing in time for the Nottingham-Blackpool on which I was meeting my mate which was dissapointingly headed by 47436 which I took to Preston.
We jumped 86436 upto Carlisle for the overnight session to start with my heavy tripod again brought along for those night shots!
It was evident numbers for sight for myself would be very low so expectations wasn't high,
Seen between roughly 20:45 and 22:00 was the following....

08768, 08910
31259
37080, 37178, 37669
47115, 47203, 47365, 47367, 47503, 47562
81017
85028
86208, 86436, 86438
87002, 87004, 87029

143019, 143021
M53954/M54265, M53968/M54251,
80321, M80344, M80332, M80348, 80353, M80372, 80382, M80395, 80402, 80415, 80431, M80438, M80456.

It was then settle down for a night of freight, TPO's and Sleeper MK3's!!

New Sightings: 0
New Haulage: 0

The Moves.....
47401: 13:30 Manchester Victoria-Liverpool Lime Street
47411: 15:03 Liverpool Lime Street-Manchester Victoria
47447: 16:20 Manchester Victoria-Bolton
47436: 18:35 Bolton-Preston

Hi MBD1images

Great loco lists above and the TOPS Report for Mossend was really impressive.

Do you have any other TOPS Reports for Mossend or Carlisle areas in 1988, 1989 or 1990 at all please? I do love reading the lists of locos and variety that was around at this time.

Thank you very much

I do but sadly finding them all amongst all the boxes they are stored in won't be as easy!

Hi MBD1images

Thank you for responding. Yes, I would imagine that being a very tough task indeed. If I can be of some help I would be glad to oblige. If you get any chance to find anything I would be glad to pay for any copying of lists and also for all of the time and effort you put into finding anything. Hope you have had a great Christmas.

Kind regards

Kemal Ali

I won't list all the MK3 /TPO's as many repeats from my mid week jaunt, its safe to say my mate made more than me as the total for the overnight for new sightings stood at 3 MK3 Sleepers(which at the time I was happy with!).

As it was a saturday I waited for the first winner/ winnerfor the year and was rewarded as 86434 arrived which I took to Penrith for a very unexpected 47644 back on the Manchester to Glasgow train!
On arrival at Carlisle I was well chuffed to see the Newcastle had produced and it was a Peak so I took 45037 to Hexham for a unit back.
Its at this point I should point out my mate had bailed out and gone home to bed as he was worn out(light weight!), he never did have 45037!
Having arrived at Carlisle I was pleased to see a winner Class 47 on the S&C and it was also a snow ploughed IS loco in 47635 which I took to Lazonby for another winner in KD 47475 back to Carlisle, happy days!
On arriving at Carlisle another winner for sight 143001 was gained.
I wanted to see if the Nottingham - Blackpool was a winner (pretty much guarenteed fix for a Saturday) so headed south on 86403 and a DMU to Manchester Victoria to be rewarded with 47237 which was taken to Blackpool North and then back to Bolton.
A log day out but very enjoyable!

New Sightings: 4 (x 3 MK3 Sleeper, x1 Class 143)
New Haulage: 4 (45037, 47237, 47475, 47635) with 86434 new for the year.

The Moves.....
86434: 07:23 Carlisle to Penrith
47644: 08:02 Penrith to Carlisle
45037: 08:33 Carlisle to Hexham
47635: 12:37 Carlisle to Lazonby

86403: 14:54 Carlisle to Preston
