Hi,

I'm a long term reader of this forum but this is my first post. I have recently had news that i was succesful in my applciation for a TOC. After a stay in the talent pool i was informed that i got the job and have been invited to a medical in the near future.

i wear very strong glasses at the moment. With my glasses on i meet 20/20 requirments on the snellen test online . Without my glasses i can get a 3 lines down but not any further. I also have no problem with the colour blind test

My worry is that i will fail my medical due to the strength of my glasses . The role is neither a driving or conductor role but is a safety critical post.

Any advice to stop the worry this week would be very much appreiciated.

Does the job advert that you applied for specify a certain medical standard, if not then don't worry? You could always contact the TOC and discuss it with them, or wait and see what the medical examiner say?

Thanks for your reply. There is no certain requirements on the Job Spec but does state its a safety critical role & key safety role. It never entered my mind until reading a few posts on here as my vision is fine with glasses.

Hopefully it’s a case of doing the eye test on the day as I’m fairly confident i would pass & not a case of having to take my prescription in .

Hesitant to contact the TOC at the moment probably as i don’t want to receive bad news! . The same as anybody in the industry I’ve put in a lot of graft in to get to this stage and would be devastated to fall at the last hurdle.

There is a standard for uncorrected vision but it has been explained as being good enough to find your glasses.
Don't worry too much, 3rd line is probably ok.

Thanks for the reply. i think the uncorrected vision will be acceptable also. The fear is getting a no due to the strength of my glasses prescription.

Only time will tell and a few sleepless nights ahead o_O

It is uncorrected in each eye individually. I'm pretty sure that if you can meet the uncorrected standards then you will be there with correction.

Sorry i meant that i would reach the first few lines without correction. Then met required standard with glasses.

I use glasses for distance. As long as you're OK with corrected vision they'll be fine. I've never had any problems with my medical.

I have a strong prescription and passed a driver medical. The uncorrected standard is relatively low.

There is (or was) guidance on the limit of one’s prescription, but again, it’s not a very night standard.

Good luck mate. Try not to worry. I know that we all do when it concerns our quest to get our dream jobs, me included! ;)

Had the medical yesterday all seemed to go well as i read on here many times it was nothing to worry about. The gent doing the medcial said the results would be loaded onto the system within 90 mins. All seemed postive.

What is the average waiting time between completion of medical & hearing from the TOC?

What did he say about the eyesight?
No issues. Passed the standard with glasses on. With glasses off got down to around 3/4 line which he said it was fine. No prescription asked for.

He did mention there are different standards for drivers which I was aware of beforehand.

Good stuff. I suspect it is a case of the TOC receiving your alcohol and drug results, then just as long as it takes… how long is a piece of string unfortunately!

You not applied for driving then?
