Shocking day for passengers on Tuesday:

1402 from Chester to Manchester via Altrincham broke down around Greenbank and was pushed forward by the following 1502 which arrived at Altrincham some 1 hr 20 late.

Passengers were detrained at Altrincham and the train units reversed to form the 1810 (should of been the 1741 from Piccadilly to Chester and thus started from Altrincham )

The 1602 was reported (1945hrs) somewhere between Navigation Rd and Stockport still with passengers aboard and stuck behind a broken down biomass train thought to be on the single line. Appears to be a shortage of rescue locos to move the Biomass train - Loaded from Liverpool for Drax and one of said to be 20 a day in operation

Thus no trains from Stockport to Altrincham - Chester since 1553 which made it to Chester on time

2041 MAN-CTR ran, the first train to pass for about 5 hours, so the biomass must have been dragged away somewhere. RTT does not reveal how that happened because it has been cancelled in the train scheduler.

Journey Check:
”Due to a broken down train between Chester and Stockport all lines are blocked.
How does it affect your service:
Train services running through these stations may be cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes. Disruption is expected until 20:30 26/11.
Our advice to our customers:
Please expect delays and cancellations this evening on services between Chester and Manchester Piccadilly due to a broken down freight train near Edgeley. A rescue train is enroute to recover the broken down freight train but is not expected to arrive until 19:00.
A train shuttle service has been arranged to run between Chester and Altrincham, leaving at 18:21. Road transport will then take customers forward to Stockport.
A train shuttle service will leave Altrincham at 19:20 for stations to Chester.
Road replacement transport has been organised to run between Stockport, Altrincham and Chester in both directions. This will be operated by Sky Coaches and Mayfair Travel.
Metrolink ticket acceptance between Altrincham & Manchester Piccadilly is in place. “

Mid Cheshire Line was due to get a two trains an hour franchise service from December 2017. The line currently only has hourly service - with heavy loads of schoolchildren to schools around Knutsford / Northwich, plus commuters to Manchester, and a regular flow to Barclays Training College at Radbrooke Hall. Regular overcrowding, passengers left behind and trains cancelled with long waits for an hour, at stations with a lack of information screens, means the whole rail service cannot be relied upon - especially on Friday Saturdays and Sundays of late due to lack of staff.
