One manned Class 20 at each end of the consist is powerful enough to haul the load but the communication between them would be via radio and good co-ordination between the drivers. In the circumstances, if Class 20's being used then operationally much easier to have pairs at one or both ends of a train (as well as fail safe option in case of an unlikely loco failure).

Reading the article in the Echo it implies that staff training has begun on the new units but it's being delayed with the current covid circumstances. So does this mean unions came to an agreement recently ? :)

Not 1 bit of driver or guard training has taken place and there's no sign of it starting soon.

So the Echo just straight up lied?
Not really. It’s just a statement saying covid is delaying rollout and staff training is one of the things listed as being affected.

Covid can be delaying the training by delaying the conversations required to agree to start the training.

An agreement with the guards has yet to be signed off, once that's sorted talks with the drivers should begin.
And frankly I wouldn't believe a word the Echo prints anyway!!

Assuming talks did begin soon, any (optimistic or otherwise) predictions of how smoothly/swiftly an agreement might be reached, and hence when the trains might start in service?

Staff will include the people who will maintain them and no doubt they are being trained up as the mileage runs increase.

Well 2 years since the first unit was delivered and still no sign of them entering revenue earning service.

I know the pandemic has not helped matters.

Pandemic is six months delay rest of it is down to Liverpool Combined Authority not managing their relationship with its workforce.

Scuttlebutt is that Merseyrail/Merseytravel and RMT have reached some form of proposal all parties are content with. Still needs to be agreed and then drivers also need to receive a proposal.

So when will these come into service?
And the question that there's literally no answer to, official or unofficial.

'Someone' at Merseytravel suggested this year which could be 31st December for all we know. Until the parties involved get 'agreements' into place, then Class 777's are not going anywhere other than training / ecs runs! In the meantime, you still have over 35 more Class 777's still to be delivered and it has been sometime since the last one was delivered to the UK.

May be by the time the Class 777's are finally introduced, the additional work required (eg Southport Station platforms) may have been completed and there fore may not need to keep the proposed 10 Class 507's to cover that diagram!

Not needing to keep the old units would probably be beneficial from a pr perspective. Having air conditioned trains rolling before the end of summer would be nice, too. ;)

2017. Or at least that's what 'The Champion' (the local paper) said in its issue dated 16 May 2012. Scan of relevant article below.
The Southport Champion was of course only printing what Merseytravel said at the time. Had the 777s even been ordered in 2017?
