Hello,

Since none-essential travel is allowed now, I am planning on doing a Merseyrail bash very soon. I was just wondering if the all-zones Merseyrail day ranger was valid on services between Hunt's Cross and Lime Street on the City Line.

Any info is appreciated :)

No, it's not, however the Saveaway ticket is (and doesn't cost a lot more) so you probably want that. Also valid on buses and ferries if you fancied a change.

DaySaver is valid at Hunts Cross but only on Northern Line service so to access Lime Street you would need to change at Moorfields or Central

Thank you, I wasn't aware of this ticket, it's crazy how cheep it is
But it's standard issue on Merseyside so you shouldn't have any difficulty in buying it.

Someone who's more in touch than I am will be able to give chapter and verse, but be aware that the first time you buy a saveaway from most (all?) sources you will also have to buy a MetroCard smartcard for £1 for it to sit on.

Merseytravel's explanation of it all here: https://www.merseytravel.gov.uk/tickets-and-pricing/ticket-types/saveaway-ticket/

I think you've misinterpreted the recent relaxations. We're still being asked to minimise travel where possible and going train bashing is clearly not allowed.

It is you that has misinterpreted the law I'm afraid. As of today, use of public transport is legal regardless of whether it is 'essential' or not (not that 'essential' was ever exhaustively defined in the regulations).

Merseyrail day ranger is not quite a scam but highlights the argument for integrated co-ordinated public transport and a simplified fares structure.

Yes, I'm not happy that it exists as a ticket; until the 2000s, other than the bus-only Solo ticket which I think exists for social inclusion reasons Merseyside only had all-modes day tickets (instead of mode they split by zone) - which was a very good thing indeed. I'm slightly surprised their contract with the PTE allows it to exist.

What are the comparative prices for the various products?
If by this you mean the prices of the day ranger and saveaway, the daysaver £5.50 for an adult all zones, whereas a saveaway for an adult allzones is only 5p more + £1 Metrocard activation fee which someone mentioned above

PS, to my last message you do not need a Metrocard for the Saveaway ticket.

To be clear the Day Saver only includes Merseyrail and not Northern, TfW, TPE, nor the buses or ferries e.g. not Heswall, Liverpool South Parkway via Mossley Hill, St Helens, Meols Cop, Earlestown etc.

Unless it's changed, the £1 activation fee could be avoided by buying from the main ticket office on Lime Street as it's run by Northern.

Although depends where the OP is starting from

Yes - the last time I bought a Saveaway was at Lime St main ticket office in Dec '20 and it was just printed on normal credit card stock. No additional charges.

This is still the case as far as I know.

I’m afraid that’s simply incorrect. Guidance (to stay local) is not law.

Chester ticket office will also issue a Saveaway on normal ticket stock. It’s only Merseyrail operated stations that will issue on the Metro Card/Walrus smartcard.

You don't need a smartcard for saveway, I've had ones issued on normal ticket stock dozens of times from Lime Street or my local ticket office

Merseyrail Electrics ticket offices (i.e. all stations served by the third rail electrics except Chester and Liverpool Lime St main booking office) will only* sell on smartcards (and will issue the smartcard if needs be). Other railway ticket offices (i.e. Northern) will issue on CCST.

* "Are only meant to" - I suspect they technically could issue on CCST, so if you've got a friendly Merseyrail booking office clerk they might do it! :)

The above is all correct. Merseyrail Day Saver is only valid on Merseyrails Northern/Wirral Lines. Merseytravel Saveaway can be used on any mode within the zones.

While Merseyrail only tend to sell the Saveaway on the Metro Card you can buy them from other offices on paper. I have bought them from Transport for Wales conductors on numerous times too when travelling from Neston or similar. (Single from Neston to Heswall then Saveaway from there). The Metrocard is quite handy but keep hold of the receipt, I've had them not work at gates a few times despite having a valid product.

Can you use priv with the saveaway? Just wondering as it can be used on other modes of transport, so not sure if that would be allowed?

Priv doesn't work on Saveaways.

Merseyrail day saver for me is a rip off compared with the saveaway, day saver has the same morning peak restrictions as the saveaway & it's only just cheaper, than the all area day saver with the saveaway having a far wider choice of public transport mode.

Adult all area Merseyrail day saver £5.50
Adult all area saveaway £5.55

I do note above, someone refers to it "a scam". I don't actually disagree with this. It seems to be aimed at unsuspecting tourists who don't know the fares, and shows how little control the PTE have over their concession operator.
Does it work on the day ticket either? Railcards don't.
BR Fares says no, seem to checking myself some time ago, didn't work then either.

Without disagreeing with any of this (and accepting the possibility that I am reading in a tone of voice that isn't actually there) why would we expect Merseytravel to have much control over the concession operator?
