Merseyrail has won in the operator of the year category at the National Rail Business Awards in London. It is the first time the Liverpool city-region based operator has secured this accolade, building on its success as a high performer in the biannual National Rail Passenger Survey and the annual Which? train poll, as well as on the plaudits won at the North of England Excellence Awards in November.

Alan Chaplin, interim managing director at Merseyrail, commented: ‘Merseyrail has an enviable track record for winning awards, and it’s great to be recognised yet again. But, we remain determined to working hard and providing an excellent service for customers. This means constantly appraising and challenging the way we do things, innovating and applying best practice.’

Cllr Mal Sharp, Merseytravel’s lead member for rail, added: ‘We’re really pleased that Merseyrail continues to receive national recognition for the quality of service it provides, which is testament to the locally managed arrangements in place. We are always keen to improve the passenger experience, and projects such as the refurbishment of Hamilton Square and schemes across the network to improve access illustrate this.’
They seem to win quite a few awards.

A small self-contained and simple network like that is hard to get wrong. Which makes it all the worse that its recent history pre-Serco/Abellio consisted largely of companies (and BR) getting it wrong.

They are good, compared to what rail provision and service we receive in Cheshire, Merseyrail offers a great service. Please expand Merseyrail to Frodsham etc :) !

except all the extension of electrification on merseyrail in recent times was carried out by BR , and I not aware of any since then

Yes, but operationally it was terrible, not to mention the purchase of a new signalling system in the early 1990s that didn't work (the Winter of Discontent is hard to forget, I particularly recall having to leg it over the bridge one morning at Aughton Park - and it's a long run - to catch the Ormskirk train which arrived on the wrong platform with no announcements, as due to a total collapse of the signalling they'd split it up into single line sections) followed by a new PIS in the late 1990s that also, umm, didn't work.

Then again, if BR were rotten at running it, MTL and then Arriva were worse. Fewer 6-car trains, tighter turnarounds, atrocious punctuality.

Only SercoNed seem to have turned it round (not that I agree with their insular ticketing policy).
