Today I was thinking about new Metrolink extensions and,
Romiley could do with a Metrolink connection. It has 4tph to Manchester Piccadilly but is isolated to most other parts of Manchester.

So I have done some research about possible routes, and I have thought out a possible route. From Romiley the trams could run to Altrincham, MediaCityUK, or somewhere on the South Manchester Line.

Starting from Piccadilly the trams should follow the existing line to just before Velopark with a station at Ashburys further south on Alan Turing Way next to the station. The track would turn left onto the A57 until the existing Belle Vue Station , where from the existing heavy rail line could be converted to Metrolink. At Belle vue Platform 2 could be converted to Romiley bound services and the rail be rebuilt on the path next to it. A new platform towards Manchester to be built. The tram line would then move on to the existing track bed to Bredbury. After Bredbury it would run down the trackbed for another half a mile until a small field next to the A627 where it the track could be ramped up and then join the A627 and then travel along the B6104 to Romiley Town Centre. The stops on this line would be Reddish North, Bredbury, Belle Vue, Ryder Brow and Ashburys. What do you think about this proposal and would you consider any other routes to reach Romiley? Furthermore do you think this is feasible or economic? Do you think a stop at Belle Vue should be scrapped and would you add any additional stops on the line?

I can’t see too many issues with a (partially) self contained heavy rail network out of Man Pic P1-4.

2tph Man Pic to Glossop/Hadfield (limited stop to guide bridge then all stations)
2tph Man Pic to Stalybridge (all stations)
2tph Man Pic to Huddersfield (limited stop to Stalybridge then all stations)
2tph Man Pic to Rose Hill (all stations via Guide Bridge)
2tph Man Pic to New Mills (all stations via Reddish N)
1tph Man Pic to Sheffield (limited stop to New Mills then all stations)
1tph Man Pic to Chinley (limited stop)

In time, yes please! I’d most certainly be looking for non tabled 331s on the Hadfields, New Mills, Rose Hills and Stalybridges, with tabled 331s on the Huddersfields, Chinleys and Sheffields.

The issue is there is an opportunity to take 4 tph (Rose Hill & Glossop/Hadfield) away from P1-4 at Piccadilly, replacing it with 10 tph on Metrolink and creating more capacity at Piccadilly for 4 tph from elsewhere.

Also, 12 tph on 4 platforms is not a very high utilisation of infrastructure. 1 platform sees 3 tph, or to put it another way, each train has a 20 min window.
