On top of the work already underway to extend the line to Birmingham New St, 'City Deal' funding has been announced for extensions heading east and south of the City Centre:

Midland Metro - Eastside Extension

Total value: £102.6m

Local Growth Fund: £5.5m

Lead partner: Centro

Funding has been approved for the development and preparatory works to facilitate a further extension of the Midland Metro from Stephenson Street to Curzon Street Eastside, and onwards through Digbeth to Adderley Park Station.

In addition, £35m has been provisionally allocated from the Local Growth Fund, from 2016/17 onwards, to help deliver the first phase of the extension from Stephenson Street to Curzon Street, Eastside

The initial allocation of funding will be available in 2015/16 and 2016/17.

Midland Metro - Extension to Centenary Square

Overall value: £42.40m

Local Growth Fund: £8m (pre-committed)

Lead partner: Centro

This project will deliver an extension of Midland Metro from Stephenson Street via Victoria Square and Paradise Circus to Centenary Square, together with a package of complementary highway measures and the creation of a world-class public square.

This scheme was pre-approved and the funding will be available in 2015/16 to 2017-18.

Midland Metro - Edgbaston Extension

Total value: £67.5m

Local Growth Fund: £59.8m (provisional allocation)

Lead partner: Centro

This will deliver a link for the Midland Metro extension from Centenary Square to Brindleyplace, Five Ways and Edgbaston. This project will extend the Midland Metro tramway in a twin track alignment along Broad Street from Centenary Square, providing new Metro strops at Brindleyplace and Five Ways.

Funding will be available from 2016/7 to 2020/21.

Walsall-Merry Hill is so much bigger than any of the others that it would probably eat all the available funding on its own. It's also tied up with whether and when the alignment might be needed for heavy rail freight, and like other schemes for which tram-train is an option I suspect they are hanging back to see what happens with the Rotherham pilot.
