Hello all,

Looking for the cheapest way to do Milton Keynes to Cardiff in a day, as follows:-

Date: Mon 2nd Jan 2012
Out: MKC ~ 09:00
Back: CDF ~ 17:45
No railcard
Don't mind whether via London or Birmingham, just need it to be cheap!

Hoping that there will be some splits that could help...

Thanks in advance

If you're OK to travel by bus from London to Cardiff:

7:14 VT gets to Euston at 7:50 £14 return

Departs 08:30 London, Victoria Coach Station

Arrives 12:20 Cardiff, Kingsway Fford y Brenin

3hrs 50mins
Megabus

1 seat = £6.00

Departs 18:30 Cardiff, Kingsway Fford y Brenin

Arrives 22:00 London, Victoria Coach Station

3hrs 30mins
Megabus

1 seat = £7.00

choice of 4 VT services between 22:24 and 22:54 (unfortunatly these all take roughly an hour)
total cost £27

If you can get to and from Bicester easily, then take the 9.07 from Bicester Town to Didcot Parkway and use this as a split to Cardiff Central coming in at about £21-£30 depending on how soon you buy advances.

Bus X5 every half hour between Milton Keynes - Oxford, (£11.40 return) then if you want flexibility I'd suggest an Off Peak Day Return from Oxford - Bristol Parkway (£19.90 not valid via Reading, change at Didcot and because of engineering works also change at Swindon) then another Off Peak Day Return from Bristol Parkway - Cardiff (£10.70).

Total: £42. Bear in mind the train fares are today's prices. They are likely to increase by around 6% on 19th December for travel on or after January 2nd 2012. You can of course buy them now at the current price for travel on Monday 2nd January.

Edited to add: No time restrictions on the Off Peak rail tickets on Monday 2nd January.

Think Oxford to Cambridge day return was around £11 when I looked in January, so would assume around £8 for Milton Keynes to Oxford. Should be able to find the fare on Stagecoach's website for the route, Google Stagecoach X5 Oxford to Cambridge and you should get the relevant website up.

Thanks very much for your replies, excellent idea about Bicester, never thought of that.

Cheers,
Christof
