If a passenger is using a Paignton PlusBus ticket to travel from Brixham to Newton Abbot/Paignton railway station, and the bus is delayed such that the passenger misses the last train, is the passenger then stranded or can they demand alternative transport from the railway because they were delayed whilst travelling on a rail-retailed ticket?

No. PlusBus is not sold with an itinerary.

The passenger would not be entitled to a taxi etc from the railway but may have a shot at claiming additional expenses from the bus company if it is successfully argued that they failed to provide the service with “reasonable care and skill” - but this wouldn’t apply in case of roadworks, excessive traffic, road diversions etc.

Good luck with that!

I don’t think I’ve yet read a thread about a single successful claim against a bus company under the CRA - but there may be one hidden away!

In any case it comes down to sensible planning - if the last train home is crucial then don’t rely on the last possible bus to the station.

Not quite the same thing, but I used the "City Sightseeing" buses in Llandudno one summer. Their last bus failed to operate so we didn't get back to Llandudno station in time for the (not last of the day) train. We caught a service bus to Rhyl and got a train from there. City Sightseeing refunded their own ticket cost. The bus fare. Additional compensation. And a free tour voucher.
