The other night I saw an HST set in Leeds made up of a mixture of VTEC and EMT stock. Not even half a rake of one and half of the other - it was a right old mix up.

I know EMT often hire a set to VTEC - has this happened because an extra set is being permanently transferred and hasn't been fully repainted or is there another reason for mixing up the rake? Surely if they were a few coaches down in one it'd be easier to use the other full set rather than mixing and matching?

The set is NL65, usually features 2 borrowed EMT power cars (from a pool) and a set rake of carriages in VTEC livery. However due to maintenance of the wrapped carriages, EMT spare carriages have been sandwiched in. Looks like a patchwork quilt
