If you can find a great reference picture and really break it down to components you can supply then you have half a chance of fooling some of the people, and that is what I like to aspire to.

if you can get jut enough to trick the eye the brain will fill the rest sometimes ignoring the blatant tells like the plaster cast fabric showing through the rock

But with a little conniving and plenty of weathering and dirty can hide the plastic screaming at you

If you can include a natural looking item like this real grass in the foreground the brain is predisposed to be tricked

the. Real moss and it’s fine detail, and ensuring buildings seat comfortably in their surroundings and do not float, and the just untidy as nothing is usually perfect

once people take a closer look they’ll see through it, but the joy. Of catching them out even for a split second...,,

but the closer you get the easier it is to detect

But every time you do it.....just for a split second.........is worth all the effort

It will all depend how deep your pockets are,it’s a fair so plenty o f ballast for the track and then settle has a lot of countryside so you will end up either buying a lot of trees or making a load
hornby branches are a good one in the mix
sone plants in your garden may have small enough branches to cut off and help with the trees, with some many trees to fit I would recommend foam as easy to push in, paint your slopes an earth brown, real photos of the area may help, railway model paint will cost a fortune look at cheap interior house paints, you can mix terracotta and a cream or white, look what you have left over from decorating, are you able to go to settle and take photos preferably panoramic and have them cut and pasted into a scenic background?
and do not make it too clean, and most modellers who are particular will downsize ballast so if modelling 00 buy n gauge ballasts, do not be afraid to mix and match, and static grass go for dull colours the nice spring mixes do not photograph as well, but look at satellite picture and do not be afraid to mix the greens I usually had at least 3 cours in an area then kept 2 and added a new one and moved along, you can make dried glass with the pale straw colours, just like the track you’ll get a flow you have a good base to start on, enjoy

I've said before @Jaz avalley but your layout really is brilliant. It's the small details which make things even more realistic: speed signs being the thing which interested me most (a bit sad, I know). Not something you often see on layouts but a brilliant little detail when they are present. :)

I really should add that little extra ballast to bed them in though

More cool work! I like it. Where did you get those bits from? I know http://wordsworthmodelrailway.co.uk/ has some railway signs (or he did), but I've not seen one of those yellow things before. Is it a signal of some sort?

Thanks very much @Jaz avalley for sharing those pictures of the different things: I've just searched for Knightwing on Google and found their website so I'll have a look around on there and see if anything is of interest/use. Those ATC ramps and the junction boxes look particularly interesting!
