Is it permissable to use an off-peak day return from Meadowhall to York (price £17.20) to travel from Moorthorpe (i.e. starting short) outward on the 10.01 direct train, and then later in the day travel back through Leeds to Meadowhall (passing through Moorthorpe)

I can't see a problem with that. The routes check out, BOJ is allowed, the train leaves Meadowhall after 0930 anyway, so I'd say yes.
